Premier League Tottenham vs Arsenal

Tottenham revived its European hopes by claiming the rights to brag with a 2-1 victory in north London late over Arsenal.

Spurs had to beat the Gunners to stay in the running for the Europa League qualifying and the 81st minute winner of Toby Alderweireld did the job.

Arsenal had gone through an extraordinary attack by Alexandre Lacazette in 16 minutes, but a defensive howl allowed Son Heung-min to level up in three minutes.

He was going even until Alderweireld went home to seal the points that raised Spurs over Arsenal on the table and ensured that Jose Mourinho remained unbeaten against the Gunners at home in the Premier League.

Now it will be seen if the Manchester City European ban will be lifted on Monday as this has implications for both sides in North London and their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

The spurs are currently in eighth place, a position that would be sufficient for qualification in the Europa League if City were not allowed to compete in the Champions League next season, two points above the Gunners.

In addition to putting them back in the game, this is a victory that somehow brings spirits to the club and Mourinho will be happy with the reaction after a dismal draw in Bournemouth on Thursday.

Arsenal will have to realistically take nine points from the games against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Watford as they came out with nothing to show in a game they dominated for long periods.

The Spurs were so bad against Bournemouth that they failed to force a shot on goal against a team that had conceded nine goals in their last two games, but needed only 15 seconds to improve here.

It was a sign of the positive start they made when Lucas Moura tested Emiliano Martinez from a distance in the first action of the game.

Moura, in a wide position to the left, almost pulled out a shot for Spurs while playing Kane with a nice cross, but the England captain failed to lift the ball on Martinez’s outstretched arms.

Arsenal were slow, but a moment of brilliance brought them ahead in the 16th minute.

Spurs right back Serge Aurier put the ball in the hole and made a weak save, allowing Lacazette to advance with the ball and throwing a right footed shot in the top corner from 20 yards.

But only two minutes and 17 seconds later the lead was canceled after a terrible defense by Sead Kolasinac.

The defender painfully made the mistake of switching to David Luiz, who was unable to react and Son broke in, advancing on goal and returning home beautifully.

Only a good save by Martinez kept Arsenal in half an hour while the Argentine acrobatically overturned Ben Davies’ fierce shot on the crossbar.

From then on, Arsenal began to take control, finishing the first half with the efforts of Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who went off target.

This continued after the break and the Gunners were inches away from regaining command as they hit the carpentry shop just before the hour.

A good move saw Aubameyang play in the far post and the Gunners’ captain crushed an effort that hit the crossbar.

The Gabon striker approached again when the ball came to him on the back post, but his first attempt, which was bending in the lower corner, was spilled well on the post by Hugo Lloris.

Eventually Spurs came back to life after the break and Moura freed Kane with Martinez again by denying the attacker Spurs with a smart save.

But it was from the resulting corner that the hosts took the lead when Alderweireld met Son’s handover and sent a header into the far corner.

With Arsenal chasing the game, Spurs had a chance to kill him on the break, but Kane was again kept out of Martinez while Son chose not to switch to his teammate when Kane had a tap-in.
