In the 5: 3 win against FC Augsburg, FC Bayern mostly focused on players who had not played first fiddle recently – namely Leroy Sané, Sadio Mané, Joao Cancelo and Serge Gnbary.

While Mané had to sit out for weeks due to an injury and Cancelo fell victim to a change in tactical orientation, the two German internationals made the headlines on non-sporting issues.

Against FCA, Gnabry and Sané got the chance together again from the start – and took advantage of it. After three substitutions in a row, Sané scored against Augsburg, even with a head. In addition, the left foot added Cancelo’s hit to the important, because quick 1:1 equaliser.

Gnabry, last came in the Champions League and twice in the league as a joker and was previously substituted at 2: 3 in Gladbach with the kicker note 5 at break, was allowed to whirl against Augsburg in the front line next to Mané, but made it onto the scoreboard the 27-year-old not quite.

If two players are blamed for a negative series, that doesn’t make sense in my opinion.

After the final whistle, Gnabry still allowed a glimpse into his inner life as he looked back at the past few weeks full of criticism. “It’s part of something, but sometimes it’s too crass. At some point it’s enough.”

Gnabry sees himself and colleague Sané in the role of the scapegoat, according to the 27-year-old in an interview with “Sky”. “If two players are blamed for a negative series, that doesn’t make sense in my opinion. We have to deal with it, but it’s not nice to hear when it’s against oneself or against a teammate,” Gnabry continued.

Nagelsmann: “Don’t change Sané’s character”

Only on Friday before the Bavarian derby against FCA did Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann protect his two idiosyncratic stars. Sané “will not change his character. We have to bring his strengths to the field, which are exceptional. He is one of the best players in Europe. We simply need him. That’s why you have to have a certain acceptance. The same applies to Serge,” he said the 35-year-old coach.
