Not much more than a month ago you could really feel sorry for Alex de Minaur. The Australian was actually in good form and had correspondingly high ambitions when he met Serbian high-flyer Novak Djokovic at the home Grand Slam in Melbourne. It has become a violent, obvious three-set defeat against a loosely playing Djokovic. Who would win the title at the first major event of the year in an impressive manner a few days later.
A defeat that de Minaur undoubtedly had to nibble on. Only to give his career a new milestone in Acapulco: With his three-set win over Tommy Paul in the final, the 24-year-old was crowned champion at ATP 500 level for the first time. “This title is the merit of all the work and suffering that I have experienced over the years. It was a lot of effort to get here,” said de Minaur after his success. “I always believed that I had the level and I was finally able to show it. It was my third final at an ATP 500 event and I was finally able to win one.
Alex de Minaur has big things in mind
Of course, this shouldn’t be the end of it, as de Minaur was quick to emphasize: “Now is the time to keep working, keep getting better and fight to get up the rankings – like I’ve always done in my career have,” said the Australian. “Until now I’ve never been completely happy with my career, I always want to be more and always better. Even at the point where I am now, with an ATP 500 title in my hands, I still want more,” explained the seven-time tour champion. “All of this will give with more strength and motivation to continue pursuing my dreams, which are much bigger.”
So far it has been a problem that he has never been able to show consistently good performances in the big tournaments: Six titles at ATP 250 events and only now in Acapulco the first at ATP 500 level speak a clear language here: ” What I have to do is play better in the Masters 1000 events and the Grand Slams,” emphasized de Minaur. “Technically I might need to be more aggressive at certain moments, maybe have a bit more confidence, but I think I’ve got the level. My record against the top 10 players is a lot better right now than it has been in my entire career, I’m above that I very happy.” Just like winning the title at the Acapulco ATP 500 event.
