An intense snowfall forces the neutralization of the first stage of O Gran Camiño in Lugo

The snow has put a blur on the premiere of The Great Way, the test that has returned to Galicia the illusion of cycling. The first stage, which took place this Thursday between Lugo and Sarria, has been neutralized 18 kilometers from the finish line after the riders in the peloton have decided to get off their bikes due to inclement weather.

The race began with water due to the rains, but as the cyclists entered the Lugo mountains they began to feel colder and colder. In the end, a heavy snowfall has caused the participants to stand in the middle of the road. The peloton has decided of their own accord that with these conditions they could not continue. Among them was Jonas Vingegaard, winner of the last Tour de France.

After the bulk of cyclists stopped, the escaped runners had to be stopped. The three cyclists who had escaped wanted to continue to the finish line, but finally stopped when they heard the decision of the rest of their teammates.

The Tomorrow’s stage will take place with the province of Pontevedra as a stage, starting in Tui and, after a tour of the province, arriving at Mount Santa Trega, in A Guarda. Already on Saturday a section corresponding to the Camino Xacobeo will be covered in the province of Ourense, between Esgos and Rubiá, and on Sunday the return will end with a short stage, 18 kilometers between Novo Milladoiro and Santiago.
