at 19, a great hope dies, stabbed several times for a simple joke

“A talented young footballer, who dreamed of becoming Sergio Busquets’ successor at FC Barcelona”, this is how young Oshwin Andries was described by those close to him. Captain of the South African U20s, the 19-year-old median seemed to have a future all mapped out in the middle of the round ball. But, last week, his fate changed. Because of a simple joke.

Active at Stellenbosch FC (South African D1), where he was notably known for being the youngest scorer in the history of the club, Oshwin Andries was in a tavern when a man, to whom he had just made a joke, stabbed him repeatedly in the head and back. Immediately taken to hospital, the young midfielder succumbed to his injuries a few days later, surrounded by his loved ones.

On social networks, many people have paid him a last tribute in recent days.
