And again England fails on a penalty
| Reading time: 2 minutes
England and the penalties – it’s a seemingly never-ending story. In an exhilarating quarter-final, captain Harry Kane becomes the tragic hero when he nails a penalty over the goal late in the game.
HHarry Kane took his time. The striker stood on the penalty line and waited before heading for the penalty spot. Referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio had already released the ball when the England striker finally went for a penalty in the 84th minute. Kane took three quick steps at the score of 1:2, then he had the ball. The captain threw the ball over the goal with full force.
It wasn’t even close, the ball went well over the bar. It was the dramatic climax of an exhilarating quarter-final in which England lost 2-1 to France. And a new chapter in the seemingly never-ending story of “the English and the penalties”. England was clearly better than the reigning world champions and big favorites, especially in the second half. But the French acted smarter and scored the decisive goal. Veteran Olivier Giroud scored with a header in the 78th minute.
In the 54th minute, he proved that Kane can do it from the spot when he confidently converted a penalty kick. With this goal, the Tottenham Hotspur striker drew level with the previous English record scorer Wayne Rooney. It was his 53rd goal in national jersey. Rooney also comes up with the same amount, but he needed 120 games for it.
“He’s a world-class striker”
The record will be little consolation for Kane. England was on the trigger and clearly superior. The equalizer would have boosted them further, the team would have gone into extra time with a clear advantage. So there was only the end after an exciting game. “It’s hard to find the right words. We could have won. I don’t know what to say. What should I say about the penalty: how many goals did it score for us? How many goals did he score? He’s a world-class striker, I can’t imagine our game without him,” said Jordan Henderson.
After the World Cup semi-finals four years ago and the Euro 2020 final, it seemed that the highly talented team, peppered with top stars, was ripe for the title. But again the English got a penalty between them. In 2020 they lost the European Championship final against Italy on penalties in London.
1990 World Cup semi-finals against Germany, 1996 European Championship semi-finals against Germany, two years later in the World Cup round of 16 against Argentina, 2004 in the European Championship quarter-finals against Portugal, 2006 World Cup quarter-finals against Portugal, 2012 European Championship quarter-finals against Italy – England’s penalty list is very long.
