NEW YORK (EFE).- Two pairs of sneakers worn in 1985 by Michael Jordan raised almost $300,000 this Thursday in an online auction held by Christie’s.
The star lot of this sale of items aimed at collectors in the sports field was a pair of Air Jordan 1, the first tennis model created by Nike for the NBA star, which Jordan himself wore on the court and which was sold for $189,000 (including buyer’s premium).
Despite the high number, there was only one bid and the lot was placed below Christie’s estimated range of between $200,000 and $300,000.
Another pair of 1985 Air Jordan 1s, in this case signed and likely worn by Jordan, sold for $107,100.
Sales were far from the record amounts paid in recent years for other shoes by the basketball legend: in 2020 Air Jordan 1S grossed $560,000 and in 2021 Nike Air Ships worn by Jordan in 1984 reached nearly $1.5 million. of dollars.
In total, in the auction that Christie’s closed today, seven pairs of Jordan sneakers were put up for sale, but several of them were left without a buyer, something that also happened with other items offered, including two other pairs of shoes worn by the tennis player Serena Williams, for which it was expected to raise up to $15,000 and $20,000, respectively.
Nor did he find a buyer for a Los Angeles Lakers jersey worn in a game by the late Kobe Bryant and which was presented with an estimated price of between $100,000 and $150,000.
Some exclusive designs were also offered at the auction, such as several pairs of sneakers resulting from collaborations between Nike and Louis Vuitton and a chest designed by the designer Virgil Abloh – who was the artistic director of the French brand and who died in 2021 – sold for just over $100,000.
