Paraguay began its defense of the gold achieved four years ago in Cochambamba 2018 in men’s basketball, with a categorical and too calm victory against Bolivia, in a SND Arena that was once again packed.

The Paraguayan men’s basketball team defeated the Bolivian team by a wide score of 99-48, that nothing could be done before the power and superiority of Paraguay.

The second game of the national team will be this Wednesday against Chile, starting at 8:00 p.m. at the SND Arena, seeking to take a new step towards retaining the gold medal of the last games.

On that occasion, Paraguay had won 4 of its 5 games, having lost only to Colombia and then won against Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Peru.

The six and a half places that South America will distribute in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup “are well deserved,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in Paraguay on Tuesday.

The World Cup to be jointly organized by Canada, the United States and Mexico will be the first to have 48 participating teams, from the 32 teams that will host Qatar-2022 (from November 20 to December 18).

“South America has a very important history in football and those 6 and a half places are well deserved. The qualifiers (in South America) are the most difficult in the world,” said the Italian-Swiss director during the inauguration of a high-performance center for women’s football in Paraguay, host country of Conmebol.

The South American Confederation (Conmebol), made up of ten federations, had four and a half places for the World Cup in Qatar.

Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador achieved their direct ticket to the World Cup, while Peru fell in the playoff against Australia.

“The matches that take place here make us fall in love,” pondered Infantino, who attended the inauguration of the center along with the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, and the president of the Paraguayan Football Association, Robert Harrison.

“This High Performance Center is fantastic. This is a team project. Having a High Performance Center for women’s football is an example for the world,” emphasized the FIFA boss.

Infantino highlighted the effort being made in this part of the world so that female athletes have increasing visibility, still far from the passion that the king sport awakens in the Southern Cone.

The high-performance center required an investment of just over 5,300,000 dollars, with the Paraguayan Football Association’s own funds as well as FIFA’s “Forward” and Conmebol’s “Evolution” programs.

Libertadores Cup 2022

The VAR (video assistance to arbitration) will be available from the first phase in the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana of 2023, as well as in the Recopa, Conmebol announced this Tuesday after a meeting of the entity’s council.

The council of the South American Football Confederation, meeting at its headquarters in Luque (outside Asunción), authorized the video arbitration tool from the beginning of the competitions “upon verifying that the technical and logistical conditions exist to apply this measure.”

The South American managers examined the proposals of the supplier companies that participated in a tender before resolving its implementation from next year.

The tender was endorsed by an international consulting firm that certified the correctness of the entire process, Conmebol said in a statement.

The review system will bring greater transparency from the very beginning of the main club tournaments on the continent, a request expressed by several participating clubs.

“The realization of this project involved overcoming various technical and logistical obstacles that prevented, until now, the use of VAR in the initial stages of competitions,” explained the entity.

“Along with working to fully implement VAR in its tournaments, Conmebol promotes training programs for referees and referees in the handling of this tool,” the sports organization commented on its digital site.
