Second Federation

The coach has achieved the best start to the season in the club’s history and is just one game away from equaling the longest undefeated streak of the Sestaotarras in the league

The coach is always the first one on the trigger when things don’t go well. In most cases where teams are going through bad dynamics and need a boost, they usually opt for a replacement on the bench. For this reason, it is also fair to attribute a good part of the successes to them when everything goes perfectly and great milestones are achieved at their command. This sweet situation is what Aitor Calle is currently experiencing at Sestao River, immersed in a brilliant winning streak that is breaking several of the club’s own records.

The Sestao River is the living image of nonconformity. Last year they fell on the brink of promotion to First Federation, completing a season that bordered on outstanding. Even so, they decided to change several transcendental issues, trying to take a step forward this campaign. The most notable change occurred in the sports management, where Carlos Lasheras replaced Ander Vidal. He decided to move the first team training to the mornings to professionalize the club and have more spaces available to him where he can train. Likewise, he has managed to put together a squad full of renowned players.

Of course, he decided to keep the backbone of the previous year, trusting that they had enough to fight for the long-awaited promotion. Among them was the coaching staff headed by Aitor Calle. Time is proving them right in this league start. Six victories in six rounds make them leaders of the group, with a six-point advantage over the second. Not only that, but they are the best team in the entire Second Federation and the only one with full victories of the 172 clubs that play in the four main leagues in the country. In addition, if they win the next match, they would overtake Real Madrid as the best league start in all of Spanish football this season.

They are also breaking internal records. This is the best start in the history of the club, which until now had four consecutive wins. It was achieved by Iñaki Zurimendi -2001/02 season-, Carlos Pouso -2003/04 season- and Carlos Docando -2010/11-. All of them in Third Division. Now, Aitor Calle has already won this record, with two games ending with a margin of victory. As if all this were not enough, they could be just around the corner from equaling another historical figure: that of the longest streak of consecutive league games without knowing defeat. Although everything happens to beat Deportivo Alavés B next Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

24 league games without losing

The Sestaotarra team has 24 consecutive league games without losing. The last defeat dates back to January 9 against Tropezón (1-0). More than nine months have passed since then, where the black-and-white have achieved 19 wins and five draws, adding a total of 62 points out of a possible 72. This record is held by Ibon Etxebarrieta, when, between the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, his team managed to remain undefeated for 25 games in the Third Division. The numbers were 16 wins and nine draws, so in that period they added 57 points out of a possible 75.
