Darts World Cup: Australian Smith continues to surprise

Darts-WM

Raymond Smith remains one of the surprises at the Darts World Cup in London. The 42-year-old Australian beat Florian Hempel 4-1 in the third round on Monday. In the second round, the German sensationally took fifth place in the world rankings Dimitri van den Bergh (BEL) out of the tournament.

Smith, who does not yet have a license to play the professional tour of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), impressed with a quiet game and consistently good recordings. 60 times “The Guru” threw 100 or more points, 21 times over 140 points and four times the maximum of 180 points. Hempel couldn’t keep up with the consistently high scoring.

Smith had already defeated the South African Devon Petersen (PDC-28th) in the second round. In the round of 16 from Wednesday the winner of the game Mervyn King (ENG / 21) against Steve Lennon (IRL) is waiting for Smith.

In the first games on Monday, Dirk von Duijvenbode (NED / 17) prevailed 4: 3 against Ross Smith (ENG) after a 3-0 set deficit. A feat that was only achieved for the sixth time in 29 years of the World Cup. Then Michael Smith (ENG / 9) defeated the Irishman William O’Connor clearly 4: 2 after starting difficulties.

Positive CoV test from van der Voort

The Dutch Vincent van der Voort has meanwhile tested positive for the corona virus and had to give where. This was announced by the PDC world association on Monday afternoon. This moved his English opponent James Wade directly into the round of 16. The evening session took place with two instead of three games as planned.

Previously, another Dutchman had tested positive for the virus in Raymond van Barneveld. The five-time world champion was eliminated from the tournament after a 1: 3 defeat against Rob Cross (ENG).
