Alexander Zverev never made a secret of the fact that the Davis Cup reform from 2019 went against the grain.
After an investment company led by professional soccer player Gerard Piqué has secured the rights to the traditional competition, it will be played in a new format with a qualifying round and a final round. This year the Davis Cup will take place from November 25th to December 5th in Madrid, Innsbruck and Turin. The group stage and quarter-finals will take place in all three cities, while the semi-finals and finals will only take place in Madrid.
Zverev announced months ago that it would not take part. “As soon as the old format is back, with home advantage and a duel at the weekend, I’ll be there,” said the 24-year-old in “Sport Bild”.

Germany at the Davis Cup against Serbia and Austria
In Madrid, Innsbruck and Turin, 18 teams in six groups of three are fighting for the crown in the Davis Cup. Germany gets it in group F in Innsbruck with hosts Austria and Serbia to do with superstar Novak Djokovic.
Team captain Michael Kohlmann has nominated Jan-Lennard Struff, Peter Gojowczyk, Dominik Koepfer and the Olympic double Kevin Krawietz / Tim Pütz – and is optimistic about the tournament. “Our aim is to beat a Novak Djokovic as well. That has to get into the minds of the players,” said the 47-year-old.
