The idea of a mid-season tournament is still being studied

The success of the “play-in” shows that changes and renovations can still be made in the NBA. For this reason, work continues on the proposal for the establishment of a mid-season tournament. For Adam Silver, inspiration must come from European football and its European Cups creating events in the heart of a regular season that can become monotonous.

“It is for this reason that I am particularly interested in different formats, such as tournaments, for example, because even if the players have miles in their legs, there could be other ways to present it,” he explained in 2019. “Assuming they will play 82 games, maybe there could be two tournaments during the season and it would involve a number of matches during the season. “

The players nag, thinking they have to play even more games. The League to impose its ideas is ready to put his hand to the wallet with a very substantial endowment: one million dollars per player for the winning team of the tournament.

Beyond its organization, it would therefore cost between 15 and 17 million dollars for the NBA, but it is not necessarily enough to convince the stars of the championship. On the other hand, it would be a huge bonus for minimum wage players, probably much more motivated by this type of competition.

For now, the NBA is discussing it with members of the league and regulation committee, and no date has been anticipated for its launch.
