PBSI Satisfied with Sudirman Cup Group Draw Results

Jakarta

PP PBSI assessed that the 2021 Sudirman Cup draw was quite good for the Indonesian badminton team. However, athletes should not be careless.

The draw for the 2021 Sudirman Cup group stage has just been held. A total of 16 participating countries were drawn into four groups, where the winner and runner-up of each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

The world mixed team badminton event is scheduled to be held on September 26-October 3 in Vantaa City, Finland. The city was appointed as the host replacing Suzhou in China.

Indonesia, which is seeded 3/4, is in Group C with Denmark, ROC (Russian Olympic Committee), and Canada.

This will be Indonesia’s 10th meeting with Denmark in the Sudirman Cup group stage. Previously, these two countries had met each other in the group stage in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

On paper, the toughest opponents for the Red-White team are, of course, the Danish team who have evenly distributed strength, such as Viktor Axelsen (men’s singles), Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (men’s doubles) to Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje, but ROC and Canada must also remain vigilant. . This was conveyed by the Head of the Development and Achievement Division of PP PBSI, Rionny Mainaky.

“For the draw for the Sudirman Cup, I think it’s quite good. However, we must not be careless and take it for granted because we are in the same group as Denmark, which is balanced and also Russia and Canada, which can be surprising,” Rionny said in a PBSI release.

“Now we will focus on preparing ourselves for these important tournaments.”

Rionny said that he had prepared special programs in training in the hope of returning the symbol of world badminton supremacy to Indonesia. The last time Indonesia won the Sudirman Cup was in the first edition in 1989.

Rionny also confirmed that he would hold a simulation as a series of preparations.

“For now, indeed, we in all sectors are still doing recovery exercises, recovering after the Olympics and then from stamina, physically and mentally. Now, after this we will only go into intensive preparation, both the Sudirman Cup and Thomas & Uber,” said Richard’s younger brother. and Rexy Mainaky’s.

“The coach and I have also prepared special programs for athletes, because reflecting on yesterday’s experience in Tokyo, what more or less must be improved, including that we will hold a simulation in the near future as a series of seeing the team’s readiness,” he continued.

For the first time, the Sudirman Cup was held in the same year and close to the Thomas & Uber Cup.

The Thomas & Uber Cup was supposed to be held in an even year or in 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the men’s and women’s team event had to be postponed by a year. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) finally decided to hold it this year.

“We will prioritize all these tournaments, both Sudirman Cup and Thomas & Uber because they are all important. I will try my best with coaches and athletes. Even though the time is close but there is a one week gap between Sudirman Cup and Thomas & Uber Cup, I think that’s enough to restore the condition of the children,” said Rionny.

“I’m sure we are all ready and more motivated. My principle is that every tournament the target is to win. Hopefully this year we can bring the Sudirman Cup back to Indonesia,” concluded the former coach of the Japanese badminton national team.
