The Venados de Mazatlán secured a 5-1 victory over the Águilas de Mexicali, evening their series in the 2026-2027 Liga Mexicana del Pacífico Banamex season. A four-run surge in the opening inning proved decisive, providing enough cushion to shift the momentum in the border-city matchup.
First-Inning Surge Sets the Pace
The Mazatlán offense established an early lead that the Águilas could not overcome. The rally began with consecutive singles from Austin Davis and Ramón Ríos. Orlando Piña followed with a two-run double, driving both runners home. Carlos Arellano continued the momentum with a single to score Piña, and after stealing second base, Arellano crossed the plate himself on a hit by Gage Howard to cap the four-run frame.

Ernesto Borges Manages the Lead
Venados starting pitcher Ernesto Borges held the lead through his four innings of work. He allowed four hits, struck out two batters, and issued two walks. The Mexicali offense finally broke the shutout in the fifth inning against reliever Leonel Becerra. Yadir Drake drove in Norberto Obeso for the Águilas’ only run of the night. During that same play, Esteban Quiroz was put out at home plate, preventing further damage.
Mazatlán Secures the Win
Mazatlán reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning on a groundout force out by Andrés Álvarez. Juan Pablo Téllez earned the win in relief, moving to a 1-0 record on the season. The loss was charged to Mexicali starter Fernando Lozano, who fell to 1-2.
