Spanish soldier dies during military training in Zaragoza

Spanish Army leadership expressed “profound sorrow” after a soldier died Sunday during training operations at the San Gregorio National Training Center in Zaragoza, rac1.cat reported.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the soldier, identified by the initials F.J.G.J., died during a tactical instruction activity. Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the incident. The soldier was assigned to the 10th Field Artillery Group, part of the “Guzmán el Bueno” X Brigade, and had enlisted in the Spanish Army in 2018.

Military Leadership and Association Responses

In an official statement, the Army Headquarters extended its unconditional support and deepest condolences to the family, friends, and unit comrades of the fallen soldier. The Spanish Association of Troops and Sailors (ATME) also issued a statement offering assistance to those affected by the tragedy.

The association highlighted the inherent dangers of military service, noting that troops routinely engage in high-risk professions that remain inadequately recognized. ATME emphasized the severe personal toll such incidents inflict on military families and unit members.

Preceding Incidents Within the Brigade

Sunday’s fatality follows a similar fatal incident involving the same brigade less than three weeks earlier. On October 22, a 23-year-old soldier assigned to the Headquarters Battalion of the “Guzmán el Bueno” X Brigade died in an accident within the military compound at the Cerro Muriano base in Córdoba, rac1.cat reported.

Both the Ministry of Defense and military judicial authorities are conducting separate inquiries to establish the sequence of events leading to Sunday’s death at the San Gregorio facility.
