Shiomi Nagi of Kobe Noda High School claimed the girls’ title at the Dunlop Road to the Australian Open Junior Championships domestic qualifier in Yokkaichi, a victory that secures her a spot in an upcoming international tournament with a wildcard to the main draw of the Australian Junior Open, Yahoo! News Japan reported.
The event, a collaborative effort by Sumitomo Rubber Industries and the Japan Tennis Association (JTA), was held from Nov. 3-7 at the Yokkaichi Tennis Center in Mie Prefecture. The tournament featured 16 boys and 16 girls, all under 17 years old, competing for the right to advance to the international “Dunlop Road to the Australian Open Junior Championship,” scheduled for the same venue from Nov. 8-12. The winner of that international event receives a wildcard into the main draw of the following year’s Australian Open Junior Championships.
Tournament Structure and Path to Victory
Players competed in round-robin groups, with the top finisher from each of the four groups advancing to a single-elimination final tournament. In the girls’ bracket, Nagi emerged from Group A undefeated. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Yume Hoshi of ITS Bellz and a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Ayaka Kasuga of Jinai Joshi High School, securing her place in the semifinals with a perfect 3-0 record.
The other group winners who joined Nagi in the semifinals were Rito Goto of RasTat TC, Hinako Morishita of Taisho Gakuen High School, and Hayu Fujiyama of the Yasui Lawn Tennis Club. The semifinal matches were best-of-three tiebreak sets, with a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set if needed.
In the semifinals, Nagi faced Goto. After a closely contested first set that went to Nagi 6-4, Goto evened the match by winning the second set 6-4. Nagi, however, regained control in the third set, winning 6-3 to advance to the final. In the other semifinal, Morishita defeated Fujiyama 6-2, 6-4.
Final: Nagi Defeats Morishita for the Title
The final was a showdown between the two top performers from the group stage and semifinals. Nagi and Morishita played a competitive first set, with Nagi ultimately prevailing 7-5. She then took control of the second set, winning 6-3 to claim the championship.
In the third-place playoff, Goto secured the final podium spot by defeating Fujiyama 6-3, 6-0.
Next Steps for Nagi and Other Japanese Juniors
With the domestic qualifier complete, attention now shifts to the international tournament from Nov. 8-12.
Separately, a “Dunlop Road to the Asia Pacific Elite 14 & Under” domestic qualifier was also held for players aged 13 and under. The girls’ champion, Rin’o Sotachi of Keio Akagi Academy, earned a spot in the “2027 Dunlop Road to the Asia-Pacific Elite 14 & Under Trophy in Yokkaichi,” scheduled for Nov. 9-11 at the same venue.
