Scicli names Jungi sports ground after Franzo Trovato

The municipal sports ground in the Villaggio Jungi district of Scicli now carries the name of Franzo Trovato, following a public dedication ceremony held on a Saturday afternoon that shifted from rain to clear skies. Mario Marino joined Enza Trovato to unveil the commemorative plaque at the 11-a-side football facility, officially designating the venue in honor of the late municipal social services official and local football director who died in 2012 at age 55.

Community Unveiling at Villaggio Jungi

The dedication ceremony brought together municipal leaders, local athletes, and long-time friends of Trovato at the multi-purpose sports complex. The path to the naming began with an initiative driven by Trovato’s close associates within the Scicli sports community. Following a unanimous vote by the Scicli City Council, the municipal administration coordinated administrative approvals with the Prefecture of Ragusa to secure the public dedication.

Local sporting figures gathered for the unveiling, including members of the Sport&Food association led by Raffaele Giallongo, alongside Bruno Trovato and Giovanni Giannone. The afternoon program featured a screening of a video chronicling Trovato’s life, followed by a blessing from Don Davide Lutri and a traditional match featuring veteran players.

Overcoming a Decade of Disrepair

The venue spent over a decade shuttered and abandoned before undergoing structural rehabilitation. Guglielmo Scimonello, the former sports councillor who coordinated the rescue efforts, pointed to the extensive work required to pull the complex out of decay.

“Dedicare il campo Polivalente di Jungi a Franzo Trovato assume un valore profondo per tutta la comunità,” Scimonello stated, describing the venue as a space where future generations will inherit Trovato’s commitment to local sport. The facility’s restoration transformed the structure into what organizers termed “la casa di Franzo.”

Next Steps for the Scicli Complex

With the dedication plaque uncovered and the veteran match concluded, the Villaggio Jungi facility returns to regular community and youth athletic use under municipal administration. Local sports associations plan to utilize the restored pitch for ongoing youth football programs and community gatherings in Scicli.
