“For the good of the region and its young footballers” — that is the stated aim behind a potential marriage between two neighboring clubs in Switzerland’s Broye region, as FC Portalban/Gletterens and FC Saint-Aubin/Vallon move to enter discussions on a merger, laliberte.ch reported.
The lakeside club, FC Portalban/Gletterens, gave a positive notice at its general assembly on October 29, clearing the first internal hurdle toward talks with its neighbor, FC Saint-Aubin/Vallon. Whether Fribourg football will soon see a new merged club now depends on what those discussions produce.
A Steering Committee Is the First Concrete Step
Portalban/Gletterens president José Fonseca confirmed the next move: “We are going to launch a steering committee,” he said, according to laliberte.ch. The committee would steer the talks between the two clubs, but no timeline, terms, or structure for a combined entity has been announced.
The October 29 assembly vote is the only decision formally taken so far. Saint-Aubin/Vallon has signaled openness to the discussion, but neither club has put a date on when negotiations would begin or conclude.
One President, Two Clubs
Fonseca also serves as president of FC Bulle, and laliberte.ch notes that this dual role is not unrelated to his push for the two Broye clubs to draw closer. Holding leadership positions at both Portalban/Gletterens and Bulle gives him a direct hand in shaping how football is organized across the wider Fribourg area.
