Patrick Long Oversees NFL’s Global Talent Development via IPP

NFL Global Expansion Targets Spanish Talent Development

Patrick Long aims to transform the NFL into a more international competition, modeling its talent pipelines after the NBA’s global reach.

As the league’s director of international development, Long oversees initiatives like the NFL Academy and the International Pathway Program designed to scout athletes born outside the United States and Canada, EL PAÍS reported.

The league’s international push arrives as the Atlanta Falcons and the Cincinnati Bengals prepare to play at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. local time, streaming on DAZN. Last year’s inaugural Madrid matchup at the venue saw the Miami Dolphins defeat the Washington Commanders 16-13.

International Pathway Program Expansion

Established in 2017, the International Pathway Program searches for and develops non-North American talent. To qualify, athletes cannot originate from the United States or Canada and must have a maximum of two years of experience in the American high school system.

Scouts comb through various sports disciplines to identify athletes with specific physical attributes, even if they never reached elite levels in their original sports. Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata famously entered the league through this exact pathway in 2018 after transitioning from rugby.

After intensive evaluations, scouts narrow the athlete pool to between 12 and 15 participants for intensive training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The 2026 promotion features 13 athletes. Long noted that Germany, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria have supplied the highest number of participants to date, with Nigeria accounting for five players in the current 13-athlete cohort.

NFL Academy Development Model

Complementing the pathway program, the NFL Academy trains international prospects aged 16 to 19 at its facility in Loughborough, United Kingdom. The institution pairs high-performance football training with rigorous academic studies to prepare students for American collegiate football.

The current academic year features 50 alumni playing within the American college football system, with 30 competing in NCAA Division I. Seydou Traoré stands as the first Academy alumnus selected in the NFL Draft, going to the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round.

Strategic Focus on Spain

Within its broader recruitment roadmap across Europe and beyond, Spain has emerged as a high-priority market for the league. Long emphasized that the organization intends to ensure every possible avenue remains open for domestic prospects.

Whether a Spanish standout ultimately secures a roster spot across any of the 32 league franchises remains an open question, though league officials maintain that international scouting efforts will continue to expand in the region.
