The restoration of the Fondo Patti sports citadel in Palermo required an investment of 5,620,000 euros, bringing back a baseball facility that had been closed for 18 years, palermo.gds.it reported.
Municipal officials visited the renovated grounds at the Cittadella dello sport to inspect the completed construction. Roberto Lagalla and Public Works Councillor Totò Orlando toured the site alongside municipal engineers and department directors to review the multi-sport venue.
Renovations at the Diamante Stadium
The project overhauled the main baseball diamond while upgrading the facility to accommodate cricket matches. Workers rebuilt the playing field, locker rooms, ticket office, and electrical infrastructure, while restoring the floodlight towers, parking lots, running track, and outdoor fitness zones. The complex also received video surveillance and intrusion alarm systems, with AMG handling the exterior electrical installations and power substations.

Financing for the project originated from a 2016 national government program for urban peripheries under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. Councillor Orlando noted that while the funds had been allocated a decade ago, the administration approved the designs and issued tenders in 2024 to execute the build.
Integrating New Sporting Communities
The facility’s opening addresses a long-standing shortage of regulation spaces for immigrant communities in Palermo. Mayor Lagalla stated that the venue is designed primarily for sports practiced by newer residents, specifically highlighting cricket and baseball. For years, foreign communities in the city played matches informally on streets or grass fields at the Foro Italico due to a lack of proper grounds.
The municipal Sport Office will manage the venue directly. Officials plan to meet with local sports clubs to schedule time slots using rate structures established under a 2023 municipal resolution, restricting entry to registered athletes. The provincial delegate for the Baseball Federation has already requested use of the ground for league matches when the spring championship begins, and rugby teams may also utilize the space for training.
Structural Assessments Highlight Seating Access Issues
While the field and outdoor amenities are complete, the spectator seating area requires extensive evaluation. The grandstands were not part of the initial contract, and structural assessments are currently being drafted to determine their condition. Architect Paola Maida, responsible for the Municipality’s Public Buildings, explained that the upper tier of gradines fails to meet modern access regulations, prompting designers to draft alternatives that could limit future capacity to between 800 and 1,000 spectators.
Construction activity continues elsewhere in the citadel. Work remains underway at the adjacent Palazzetto dello Sport, where a variance appraisal is underway to complete the remaining works. The indoor arena is expected to reach completion by the early months of 2027.
