Imane Khelif Targets World Title in Paris Professional Debut
Imane Khelif will make her long-awaited professional boxing debut on Dec. 15 at the Maison de la Mutualité in Paris, setting her sights directly on a world title after more than two years away from competitive bouts.
The 27-year-old Algerian fighter secured her status on the global stage by capturing gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the -66 kg weight category. That victory permanently linked her athletic career to the French capital, where she returns next month to begin a new chapter under the guidance of trainer Abdesselam Kalem and promoter Yacin Berrabah.
From Olympic Gold to the Professional Ranks
Khelif’s transition to professional boxing was initially scheduled for April before an injury sustained during training forced a postponement. Reflecting on the prolonged absence from competition, Khelif noted that the ring had truly been missing from her daily life.

For her professional bow in the historic Paris venue where French boxing legend Marcel Cerdan once fought, Khelif will step up in weight to contest a six-round bout of two minutes per round against Clarida Sarabia, a fighter licensed in the Netherlands. While her Olympic triumph came at 66 kilograms, this December encounter takes place in the super-welter division at 69.8 kg.
Dismissing Future Olympic Cycles for Global Professional Ambitions
Despite her iconic status following the Paris Games, Khelif confirmed she has no intention of defending her Olympic crown at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Her coach, Abdesselam Kalem, supported that direction, noting that returning to the amateur quadrennial holds no sporting value for a fighter whose ambitions now lie strictly in capturing major professional world championships.
Kalem praised his fighter’s pugilistic talent, citing her ring intelligence, exceptional work ethic, and extraordinary spatial awareness. Meanwhile, promoter Yacin Berrabah stated that the team’s objective is to propel Khelif to the pinnacle of world boxing, drawing a bold comparison to heavyweight great Muhammad Ali.
A Dream Homecoming in Algiers
Beyond her immediate Parisian return, Khelif harbors a strong ambition to fight for a world title belt on home soil. She has openly expressed a desire to headline a major card at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, a historic venue inaugurated in June 1972 that honors the date of Algeria’s national independence.
Whether that championship opportunity materializes in North Africa following her December debut is still undecided, as Khelif and her corner maintain their immediate focus on the upcoming matchup at the Maison de la Mutualité.
