Lucas Rosa has reclaimed his position in the Ajax starting lineup, marking a significant turnaround for the 25-year-old Brazilian defender. After a difficult settling-in period characterized by team instability and criticism from supporters, Rosa has become a regular fixture under manager Míchel, helping to stabilize a defensive unit that has conceded only three goals in his last four starts, according to FootballTransfers. In his most recent outing against AZ, the defender completed another full 90 minutes, bringing his total contribution for the season to 999 minutes across 13 appearances.
The defender, who is under contract in Amsterdam until mid-2029, was signed from Real Valladolid in the winter of 2024/25 for a fee of three million euros. At the time of his arrival, his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stood at a lower figure, leading to early perceptions that the club had overpaid. Today, his value has risen to a higher estimated amount. While his early months at the club were met with scrutiny following a challenging period for the team, he has since evolved into a reliable presence. Data from SciSports indicates that Rosa currently ranks among the Eredivisie’s top-performing full-backs this season, specifically in his ability to create expected goals (xGoals) and neutralize dangerous situations, FootballTransfers reported.
From Brazilian roots to the Johan Cruyff ArenA
Rosa’s path to the Netherlands included stints in Italy and Spain. He began his youth development playing on the streets of Ribeirão Preto before moving to Taubaté at age five, later transitioning from futsal to field football at age thirteen. He began his European career in 2018 at Juventus before moving to Real Valladolid in 2021. He made his first-team debut for the Spanish club on October 19, 2022, in a 4-1 victory over Celta de Vigo. Voordat hij in Amsterdam belandde, legde hij een omweg af via Juventus FC en Real Valladolid. Rosa noted in an interview with Ajax Life that his interest in the club was long-standing, recalling watching former Ajax player Maxwell at Paris Saint-Germain during his youth in Brazil. “Everyone knows the history and everyone knows who Johan Cruyff is. A legend.”

Overcoming early instability under new leadership
“I worked under eight different coaches in the last four seasons,” he noted. To manage the pressure, he chose to limit his intake of news media during the most difficult phases of the 2025 campaign, as he shared with ESPN.
Under the current management of Míchel, however, the dynamic has shifted. Rosa described the trainer as “passionate” and noted that the team’s current approach is significantly more demanding. “The difference between this year and last year is big,” Rosa told Het Parool. “That is visible on the field, in the way of playing, and there are naturally different players as well.” Rosa credits his defensive improvement to lessons learned from Giorgio Chiellini during his time at Juventus, which he says are visible “week in, week out.” Regarding the team’s ambitions, he noted that Míchel and Jordi Cruijff have clearly stated the goal is to win the championship.

Contributions beyond the pitch and future ambitions
Off the field, Rosa actively supports the Johan Cruyff Foundation as an ambassador and donates one percent of his salary to the Common Goals initiative. He told Het Parool that he encourages his teammates to participate in similar charitable efforts, viewing it as a way to support a social project in Brazil that uses football to keep children on the right path. “For us, one percent barely makes a difference, but for someone else it does.”
Looking toward his professional future, Rosa remains focused on a potential international career. He stated that the World Cup in four years remains his goal. “I am 25 years old and I still have all the time to develop further.”
Preparation for the upcoming schedule
Rosa continues his rigorous preparation for matchdays, which includes analyzing video clips of his direct opponents, often working alongside the coaching staff to understand their specific qualities. As Ajax aims to close the gap on league leaders, the defender remains focused on the team’s objective of securing the domestic title.
