Jon Rahm Leads Abu Dhabi Championship: Eyes First DP World Tour Win in Four Years

Jon Rahm Leads Abu Dhabi Championship by One Shot Entering Final Round

Jon Rahm sits atop the leaderboard at 18-under par heading into the final round of the Abu Dhabi Championship, holding a one-stroke advantage after carding a 6-under 66 on Saturday at Yas Links. The Spanish golfer entered the weekend in strong form at the first event of the DP World Tour's season-ending play-offs, working his way through a crowded field that includes Tyrrell Hatton and world number two Rory McIlroy. Over the first 54 holes at Yas Links, a course where he had never played previously, he has conceded only four bogeys while tallying 20 birdies.

Rahm started his third round quickly by birdieing the par-5 second hole, having missed a 14-meter putt for eagle. A bogey on the par-3 fourth hole momentarily halted his momentum, but he bounced back with a flurry of scoring, including a 350-meter drive on the 10th hole that set up a birdie, followed by an 8-meter eagle on the par-5 11th. He added birdies on the 12th and 15th holes to secure the solo lead.

“A fantastic round with only three holes bad,” Rahm told reporters after his round, noting his brief stumble on holes four through six. “In general it’s been a good day. Only on holes 4, 5 and 6 I lost my focus for a moment. A couple of bad shots, a bogey, and I was able to minimize the other two. From there, I played quite decent golf, I’d say throughout the day except for those three holes.”

Chasing Pack and Standings Implications at Yas Links

Francesco Laporta and Tyrrell Hatton sit just one shot back at 17-under par, applying pressure on Rahm ahead of Sunday’s final round. McIlroy lurks closely behind at 16-under par, alongside major champion Adam Scott at 15-under par and David Puig tied with Matthew Jordan at 14-under par. A victory in Abu Dhabi would mark Rahm’s sixth Rolex Series title, breaking a tie with Hatton for the most in the principal category of the DP World Tour.

The tournament carries significant implications for the Race to Dubai standings. Rahm began the week at 51st in the season-long points list, which left him outside the qualification bubble for next week’s final event in Dubai. A win would vault him up to sixth place in the rankings. The Race to Dubai crown remains contested among Eugenio Chacarra, Patrick Reed, and McIlroy, with McIlroy needing a victory this week to jump to the top spot. A victory would also help Rahm climb in the Ryder Cup rankings, though his participation in that tournament is not in jeopardy, just as it happened a year ago in New York.

Final Groups Tee off Sunday Morning at Yas Links

The final groups are scheduled to tee off Sunday morning at Yas Links. Play gets underway as they battle for the trophy and the final series points available on the European circuit.
