Jenning de Boo Misses World Cups After Cycling Crash With Kjeld Nuis

Jenning de Boo will miss the opening World Cup speed skating events after breaking his collarbone in a training accident involving Kjeld Nuis, Mee Met Oranje reported.

The 22-year-old Dutch sprinter sustained the injury during a cycling session, forcing him to withdraw from the World Cup races in Beijing and Obihiro. Nuis, a 36-year-old veteran, was also involved in the crash, which occurred just one kilometer from the end of their ride, according to RTV Noord.

Nuis and Scheperkamp called up for World Cup duty

The Dutch Skating Association (KNSB) has named Nuis and Merijn Scheperkamp as replacements for De Boo at the upcoming World Cup meets. Nuis will compete in the 1,000-meter events in Beijing (Nov. 13-15) and Obihiro (Nov. 20-22), Mee Met Oranje reported.

Scheperkamp, a 21-year-old from Hilversum, will take De Boo’s place in the 500-meter races. That spot was originally earned by Serge Yoro based on recent qualifying results, but Yoro has opted to focus on the 1,000m and 1,500m distances, NOS confirmed.

De Boo requires surgery after training ride collision

The incident happened during a routine training ride. De Boo, who had shown promising form by winning the 1,000m at a recent qualifier in 1:07.76, was preparing for his first World Cup campaign, Mannenzaken noted. The crash required surgery, and he posted a photo from his hospital bed, revealing the injury.

“An accident is just around the corner,” De Boo was quoted as saying by AD.nl, reflecting on the sudden nature of the crash. Nuis, who narrowly missed qualifying for the World Cup himself by just 0.01 seconds, was also involved in the collision.

A full Dutch squad for Beijing

In addition to Nuis and Scheperkamp, the Dutch contingent includes Isabel Grevelt (1,000m), Merel Conijn (1,500m, 3,000m, mass start), and Wisse Slendebroek (5,000m), NH Nieuws reported. Jorian ten Cate and Harm Visser will compete in the men’s mass start, while Conijn joins Groenewoud in the women’s event.

Slendebroek and Bente Kerkhoff will not travel to Obihiro. Slendebroek’s absence is due to a scheduling conflict with the Royal A-ware team, while Kerkhoff has decided to skip both Asian World Cups, NH Nieuws added.

Puck Moonen reacts as De Boo focuses on recovery

Cyclist Puck Moonen reacted to his hospital photo, expressing concern and drawing a parallel to her own surgery in November 2025 for a blood circulation issue in her leg. She understands the importance of a full recovery for an athlete, Mannenzaken reported.

De Boo himself is looking ahead despite the setback. “No World Cups for me,” he stated on Instagram, but he is focused on a return to competition as soon as possible. The full extent of his recovery timeline is unknown.

The Dutch team prepares for Beijing World Cup without De Boo

The focus now shifts to the Beijing World Cup, where the Dutch team aims to perform without De Boo. De Boo will continue his rehabilitation and is expected to provide an update on his recovery progress in the coming weeks.
