Mourners Gather in Navahermosa
Hundreds of mourners gathered Thursday in the village of Navahermosa, Spain, to lay professional soccer player Jesus de Miguel to rest. The striker, who played for CD Tenerife, died Tuesday following a mid-match collision with an opposing goalkeeper.
The funeral procession moved through the streets of the municipality southwest of Madrid before reaching the local church. Teammates from CD Tenerife carried the casket, dressed in dark suits. Prominent figures, including Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and national team coach Luis de la Fuente, were in attendance. Flags across the village of 2,000 residents have flown at half-mast since the local government declared three days of mourning.
The Fatal Collision
The incident occurred in the final minutes of a second-division match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra. During an aerial duel at the center circle, FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono struck De Miguel with his knee. The referee immediately issued a red card to Owono.
De Miguel was transported to a hospital in critical condition. His health deteriorated due to neurological complications, leading to his death from cardiorespiratory failure. The loss is the second fatal accident on a football pitch in recent months, following the August death of Portuguese midfielder Quevin Castro, who collapsed during a third-division match.
Authorities Investigate Involuntary Homicide After Contact Sport Collision
Local authorities have opened an investigation into “involuntary homicide,” a standard procedural step in Spain for deaths involving non-natural causes. Legal experts cited by El Pais note that there is no precedent in Spain for criminal prosecution resulting from a collision in a contact sport. The investigation will examine whether Owono’s actions exceeded the “permitted risk” of the game.
Jesus Owono is reportedly deeply affected by the event. He faces potential disciplinary action from the league, with some outlets speculating a suspension of up to 12 matches. Sports law specialist Miguel Galan noted that Spanish Supreme Court jurisprudence generally leans toward treating incidents within the flow of play as sporting matters rather than criminal ones.

Solidarity Across the Pitch
The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) stated that players across all categories reached a unanimous decision that upcoming matches should not proceed, citing the psychological and human toll of the loss. League officials have implemented tributes, including moments of silence. The UEFA Champions League anthem was omitted at several Spanish stadiums this past Tuesday to honor both De Miguel and the victims of a recent rail accident in Urda.
De Miguel, 30, was a respected figure in the lower divisions. He achieved professional status in 2024 with Castellon, scoring 16 goals in 35 matches to help the club secure promotion. He had recently become a key contributor for CD Tenerife.
Uncertainty Remains
As authorities continue their work, the family of De Miguel has requested privacy to process the loss. No official decision regarding potential criminal charges or the duration of the goalkeeper’s suspension has been finalized by the relevant governing bodies.
