A delay due to medical emergencies on the stands could not slow Hammarby’s march. The Stockholm club defeated Elfsborg 4-1 on Friday, overtaking Sirius to claim the league lead, Aftonbladet reported. The match, paused twice after a spectator suffered a medical emergency and a second person required medical attention, resumed at 19:44 local time and quickly became a showcase for Hammarby’s dominant form.
Paulos Abraham was the star of the show, scoring twice to take his season tally to 17, which places him in a shared lead for the Allsvenskan scoring chart with Kristian Lien of Djurgården. His performance, highlighted by a sublime assist from Frank Junior Adjei for the opening goal and a clinical finish for the second, cemented Hammarby’s position as the team to beat in the Swedish top flight. “It was a similar situation earlier in the match so I had a feeling I would get the ball and I had time to think that this was going to be a goal. It was a fine assist from ‘Frankie’,” Abraham told SVT Sport after the match.
Medical Emergency Halts Early Action
The evening began with chaos. Avspark was delayed by 15 minutes due to pyrotechnics being set off by supporters. Then, just over a minute after kickoff, play was halted completely. Players pointed towards the stands, and medical staff rushed from the benches as an acute medical emergency was announced over the stadium’s public address system.
According to reports from Expressen and TV4 Nyheter, a spectator suffered a cardiac arrest. The game was paused while the individual was attended to and removed from the arena by ambulance. After approximately 15 minutes, the speaker confirmed the person was conscious and able to speak, having been transported to a hospital. The match was scheduled to restart at 19:40, but a second medical incident was reported, forcing another delay. TV4 Nyheter reported that both incidents were cardiac-related. The match finally resumed at 19:44, with Elfsborg’s Thomas Isherwood later commenting, “It was a stop for both teams, so it was no big deal. The most important thing is that they, who were a bit sick or whatever, are okay. We football players are used to interruptions.”
Adjei and Abraham Combine for Hammarby Lead
Once play resumed, Hammarby asserted its control. The breakthrough came in the 39th minute, a product of brilliant interplay between two of the team’s most in-form players. Frank Junior Adjei, described by Aftonbladet as a “sensation” this season, received the ball in the penalty area. With quick thinking, he spotted Abraham’s run to the far post and delivered a “distinct, disguised, and brilliant” pass. The striker controlled the ball and slotted it past Elfsborg goalkeeper Theo Sander to give his team the lead.
Adjei’s development into a key player has been a significant factor for Hammarby. The 22-year-old Ghanaian, formerly used as a rotational player, now provides a “h staggering breadth” to the team’s game.
Elfsborg’s Resilience and Rohdén’s Return
While Aftonbladet noted that Elfsborg showed considerable resilience in the face of a hostile atmosphere at the 3Arena, the result was a comprehensive defeat for them. In the first 5-10 minutes, Elfsborg managed to play their way out of Hammarby’s high press, an unusual feat for away teams at the venue. Veteran defender Niklas Hult was particularly singled out for his focused performance in marking Montader Madjed on the flank.
The match also featured Rohdén. He nearly scored early in the second half, capitalizing on a dangerous moment, but his effort was cleared off the line by Tesfaldet Tekie, who has impressively fought his way back into the Elfsborg lineup.

Abraham’s Double and Isherwood’s Own Goal Seal Victory
Hammarby’s lead was effectively doubled just after the hour mark. Warner Hahn’s goal kick found Abraham, who drove forward from the left flank, cut inside, and finished with a precise angled shot to make it 2-0.
The match was put beyond doubt by an unfortunate own goal from Elfsborg’s Thomas Isherwood. In a chaotic moment inside his own penalty area, Isherwood attempted a backpass to goalkeeper Theo Sander but misjudged the pass, which Sander was not expecting. The ball rolled into the empty net, making the score 3-0. Hammarby added a fourth in the final minutes to complete a dominant 4-1 victory.
A Statement of Intent in the Title Race
This victory was another “power demonstration” from Hammarby, Aftonbladet concluded. The team, which has now won several high-profile matches against direct rivals this season, appears to be playing on a different level than its competitors. “Sirius, you have to manage to keep away with a one-point margin, because this team is sweeping everything away in Allsvenskan right now,” commentator Lasse Granqvist said on TV4 Nyheter.
Hammarby’s climb to the top of the table is significant. They now have 28 matches played and lead on goal difference over Sirius, who have a game in hand. Speaking to SVT Sport, Abraham acknowledged the pressure but also the team’s confidence. “It is a pressured match, but we are not playing like we are under pressure. We are enjoying and having fun on the pitch and playing our best football,” he said. When asked if fans are starting to think in terms of winning the league, Abraham replied, “One hundred percent. I think they can smell it, but we focus on match by match.”

What’s Next in the Allsvenskan Title Race
Hammarby’s focus will be on maintaining their momentum. Their next match will be crucial as they look to extend their lead at the summit. Meanwhile, Sirius will have the chance to reclaim the top spot on Sunday when they travel to face Kalmar FF, a match that will be a direct test of their title credentials.
