Golden State Warriors player Kristaps Porzingis announced a pause in his basketball career on Friday, citing the need to prioritize his health. The 31-year-old Latvian champion, who won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2024, stated his body “has not responded as expected” to the increased workload this season, preventing him from performing at the level he demands of himself.
“I am well, but I know what is needed and I am not at the point where I want to be to perform at the level I demand of myself,” Porzingis said in a statement. “At this point, I have decided to prioritize my health and step away from the sport I love so much.” The announcement comes after Porzingis began the season away from the team due to undisclosed medical issues and did not participate in the preseason.
Warriors Suspend Porzingis's Salary
This week, the Warriors suspended payment of Porzingis’s $20 million salary, citing the belief that the player was not fulfilling his contractual obligations. Neither Porzingis nor the players’ union has challenged the team’s decision. In his statement, Porzingis expressed respect for the Warriors and his desire to work with the franchise toward a resolution.
“I want to show the utmost respect to the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a satisfactory solution for both parties,” he said.

According to ESPN, the situation is not an official retirement and dates back to before the preseason. The outlet reported that Porzingis called general manager Mike Dunleavy two days before the first training camp practice to inform him he would not be reporting. After a meeting with the club in early October, the player left the team again.
A Career Defined by Health Challenges
Porzingis’s decision highlights a long history of health concerns. ESPN notes he has dealt with persistent health issues since contracting a viral illness during his time in Boston two seasons ago, in addition to numerous leg injuries throughout his 11-year NBA career.
The player signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with the Warriors this summer, though only $3 million of the second year is guaranteed. The franchise has not indicated an intention to terminate the contract, which ESPN reports could be used in a trade before the February trade deadline.

From Spanish Courts to the NBA
Before his rise in the NBA, Porzingis developed his career in Spain. He joined the youth academy of Baloncesto Sevilla at age 15 in 2010 after a tryout with the club. He spent three seasons in the cantera before being promoted to the first team by coach AĂto GarcĂa Reneses.
Playing for Cajasol and Baloncesto Sevilla, Porzingis appeared in 76 games in the Spanish Liga Endesa, averaging 8.2 points per game. In his final season in Spain, the 2014-15 campaign, he recorded 10.7 points and 4.8 rebounds in 34 matches, according to ACB data. He was selected fourth overall by the New York Knicks in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Warriors Press on Amidst Roster Uncertainty
Kristaps Porzingis, of the Golden State Warriors, announced he is taking an indefinite pause from his career to focus on his health. Their recent victory included a 25-point comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers.
What’s Next for Porzingis and the Warriors?
Porzingis’s indefinite pause leaves his immediate future with the Warriors unclear. The team has not commented on a timeline for his return, nor have they specified whether his absence will be covered by the NBA’s personal leave policy. The status of his $20 million salary remains a key point of negotiation between the player and the franchise as they seek a mutually agreeable path forward.
The Warriors will continue their season with their current roster, focusing on maintaining their strong play as they deal with the ongoing roster situation involving one of their key offseason acquisitions.
I am well, but I know what is needed and I am not at the point where I want to be to perform at the level I demand of myself. At this point, I have decided to prioritize my health and step away from the sport I love so much.
