FC Twente Beats Pafos 3-1 in Conference League at Home

FC Twente secured a 3-1 victory over Cypriot side Pafos FC at De Grolsch Veste, extending their flawless start to the UEFA Conference League league phase, nos.nl reported.

The Enschede club has collected nine points from its opening three fixtures, placing them third in the standings following earlier wins against FC Thun and Lincoln FC.

Pafos Goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki Smothers Early Shots from Sondre Ørjasaeter and Wout Weghorst

Pafos arrived in Enschede with a cautious tactical setup after featuring in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds last season. Sondre Ørjasaeter came close in the early stages when his effort flashed past the post, and Wout Weghorst subsequently saw a close-range shot smothered by Pafos goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki.

Following his goal, Lele received a yellow card from the referee for celebrating in front of the home supporters.

Turning Points After the Interval

Twente raised the tempo immediately after the restart, forcing Pafos deeper into their own half. Just past the hour mark, Drommel kept his side in the match by denying Lele in a one-on-one situation and stopping the subsequent rebound.

That crucial save allowed the hosts to equalize moments later. Defender Ruud Nijstad rose to meet a free-kick delivered by Daouda Weidmann, directing a header past Majecki to make it 1-1. Drommel was called upon again shortly after to thwart another dangerous header from the Cypriot visitors.

With a numerical advantage, Twente took total control.

Ørjasaeter broke through the Pafos defense with fifteen minutes remaining, remaining calm to finish past the goalkeeper for a 2-1 lead. Weidmann sealed the result ten minutes from time, converting a pass from substitute Thomas van den Belt to establish the final 3-1 scoreline.

Upcoming Fixtures in Europe

Following this home victory, FC Twente prepares for their next European assignment. The squad will travel to Germany to face Bundesliga club SC Freiburg in the fourth round of the Conference League phase.
