FC Porto claimed their first points of the UEFA Champions League season on 4 November, defeating Napoli 4-1 at the Estádio do Dragão. The result moves the Portuguese side to three points in the league phase, level with their Italian opponents after four rounds of competition.
Early Set-Piece Dominance at the Dragão
Porto opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Polish defender Jan Bednarek, who capitalized on a corner kick delivered by Gabri Veiga. Bednarek’s goal was the first of two headers from corner kicks that defined the night, highlighting the team’s preparation for set-pieces. Napoli responded before the interval when Scott McTominay leveled the score in the 42nd minute. The match, officiated by Englishman Michael Oliver with assistants Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, saw Stuart Attwell serve as the video assistant referee.
Bednarek, who had never previously scored in the UEFA Champions League, described the night as a “momentous moment” for himself and his family. The tactical focus on dead-ball situations was credited to coaches Lino Godinho and Lucho González alongside analyst Michele Aragona. “It is something we work on a lot – we have a great group that analyzes and prepares well for all situations,” Porto manager Francesco Farioli said. Following three consecutive defeats, the win allowed Farioli to see light in the competition once more.
Gabri Veiga Restores Lead After Porto Increases Offensive Pressure
The match turned decisively in the second half as Porto increased their offensive pressure. After Pablo Rosario missed a chance following a rebound and Bednarek hit the crossbar, the home side maintained their momentum. By the 64th minute, Gabri Veiga struck the frame of the goal with a long-range effort. Gabri Veiga, who was named Player of the Match by UEFA observers for his role in dictating the game’s rhythm, restored the lead following an assist from substitute Santiago Giménez.
Despite a competitive start, the visitors lost control of the game in a second half dominated by the hosts’ physical vigor and efficiency in finishing set-piece opportunities. The shift in momentum occurred around the 70th minute when Farioli utilized his bench to inject fresh energy into the squad.

The Italian press noted the contrast between the two sides after the break. The Gazzetta dello Sport described the Napoli defense in the second half as a “ship in a storm,” struggling to contain Porto’s constant pressure and movement. The publication further noted that the Italian side returned home with “broken bones” and significant uncertainty regarding their future.
Allegri Cites Injury Crisis for Napoli
Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri attributed his team’s collapse to a significant injury list that left him with limited tactical options. He specifically cited Lorenzo Lucca, Giovane, and Noa Lang, in addition to two players born in 2008, as his only available alternatives, preventing him from matching Porto’s physical intensity in the final stages.

“We committed errors in two set-piece situations and on the clearance from Meret,” Allegri stated, noting that minor defensive lapses were decisive at the Champions League level. “Today we made mistakes, and those details make the difference.” Regarding the set-piece goals, Allegri added, “On the first goal there was a change of position. On the second, we decided to man-mark the player who had scored, but they were smart enough to change the strategy.”
Porto and Napoli Sit Low in Standings Before Upcoming Matches
With three points from four matches, Porto currently sits in 26th place in the league phase standings, while Napoli occupies 27th place on the same point total. Napoli prepares for a high-stakes encounter against Lazio in Serie A, which Allegri likened to a “final” as the club looks to recover form during the upcoming international break.
