Exequiel Palacios, the 28-year-old midfielder now playing for Ipswich Town in the Premier League

Exequiel Palacios, the 28-year-old midfielder now playing for Ipswich Town in the Premier League, has again raised the prospect of returning to River Plate, telling Argentine outlet Los Edul that he would like to wear the club’s shirt again — but only when he can arrive “in good shape” and give something back to the fans. “I’d like to return, return well and enjoy it,” Palacios said in the interview. “I like the challenge of returning, of being prepared, of giving things back to River and of living up to it, because River demands everything from you all the time,” La Página Millonaria reported.

The comments revive a storyline that has followed Palacios since he left Núñez. River’s hierarchy contacted him about a possible return during the mid-year transfer window, and Palacios left the door open, but his next move went to England: Ipswich Town signed him in a deal reported at more than 20 million euros, with El Destape putting the fee at 22.5 million euros after six and a half seasons at Bayer Leverkusen.

The contract that clouds any return

Palacios joined Ipswich in the last market and signed through June 2030, according to La Página Millonaria and El Destape; Soy del Millo gives the expiry as July 2030. Either way, the midfielder will be 32 when his deal with the Premier League club runs out. That does not block an earlier move — River could still negotiate a transfer before then — but it frames the timeline: Palacios himself has not put a date on a return.

The financial obstacle is the sharper one. El Intransigente put Palacios’ estimated market value at around 25 million euros, with valuations between 24.5 and 26 million, and noted those figures do not necessarily match what Ipswich would demand. Soy del Millo added that the English club made a significant offer — reported at more than 40 million euros — to keep him, underlining how costly an early exit would be for River.

Di Carlo’s January push

Palacios’ desire to return lines up with what River’s president, Stéfano Di Carlo, has been pursuing. El Destape reported that Di Carlo had Palacios among his main targets in the last transfer market and that multiple outlets say the president would try again in January. El Intransigente described the interest as still in an early stage: Di Carlo had not yet made formal contact with the player, River had no confirmed negotiation and had presented no proposal to Ipswich, and the January window would be decisive in turning interest into an operation.

The move fits a broader squad rebuild. El Intransigente framed the interest within a restructuring after a season of results below expectations, with River looking to add internationally experienced players and strengthen a midfield that coach Leonardo Ponzio wants to rebalance. Palacios, a product of River’s youth divisions, would bring exactly that profile — and the club has other names in that area, including Aníbal Moreno, Fausto Vera, Juan Carlos Portillo, Mauro Arambarri and Lucas Silva.

A midfielder still plugged into Núñez

Far from cutting ties, Palacios keeps close contact with the club. In the Los Edul interview he said he tries to watch every River match when the time difference allows, and when he can, he watches everything. TyC Sports reported that he maintains a WhatsApp group with senior players — naming Nicolás Otamendi, Thiago Almada and Ángel Correa — where they talk daily about what is happening at River, and that Palacios asks them how they are feeling day to day. La Página Millonaria’s account of the same group also includes Enzo Pérez, known as “Cachete.”

TyC recalled that in December 2023 Palacios attended the Trofeo de Campeones final between River and Rosario Central at the Estadio Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, cheering from the stands — “that’s one for the history books,” he said of the moment. He also described the feeling of playing for Argentina at the Monumental: when he sees the stadium, “the bug bites” and he hopes that one day he can return and play there again.

The sentiment is not unique in the current Argentina setup. TyC noted that just days earlier, Enzo Fernández — Palacios’ former River teammate and now his Chelsea colleague — made a similar pledge, saying he knows he will return to River and wear the sash again when his European career ends. The two midfielders, who faced each other in a 3-2 Manchester City win over Chelsea weeks earlier, remain close, training together back when they were breaking into first teams.

What a return would mean for Palacios

Palacios was explicit that he does not want a sentimental homecoming at any cost. The challenge, he said, is arriving prepared and at the level River demands — including, as El Destape quoted him, winning what he has already won. That framing matters for a club whose recent returns of former players have not always reproduced what those players were, as Soy del Millo observed. Palacios, still a regular for the Argentina national team, is positioning a return as a competitive statement, not a farewell tour.

Palacios’ possible River return: what is confirmed and what is not

  • Has Palacios committed to a date for returning to River? No. He said he would like to return and do it well, but never gave a timeframe, according to La Página Millonaria and El Destape.
  • How long is his Ipswich contract? Through June 2030 per La Página Millonaria and El Destape; Soy del Millo reports July 2030. He would be 32 at the end of it.
  • What would a transfer cost? El Intransigente estimates his value at roughly 25 million euros (24.5–26 million range), while Ipswich paid 22.5 million euros for him mid-year, per El Destape.
  • Is River formally negotiating? Not yet. El Intransigente reports no confirmed talks and no offer to Ipswich; Di Carlo is expected to approach the player ahead of the January window.
  • Does he still follow the club closely? Yes — he watches matches when the time zone allows and keeps a group chat with current River players, per TyC Sports and La Página Millonaria.

The next confirmed checkpoint is the January transfer window, when Di Carlo is expected to test whether Palacios’ stated desire can be converted into a concrete move against a contract that runs to 2030 and a fee estimated near 25 million euros.
