Douvikas leads Como to historic 9-1 Champions League win over Lens

Como secured a 9-1 win against Racing Club de Lens in their Champions League match at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, marking one of the most lopsided results in the tournament’s history.

Anastasios Douvikas was the central figure of the result, netting a hat-trick that brought his total to six goals in four Champions League appearances. As reported by OPTA, Douvikas has scored in each of the first four matches of the UEFA Champions League, placing him ahead of established European forwards like Erling Haaland in the scoring charts. Data from OPTA indicates that the Greek forward is the second player to score in each of his team’s first four matches in the UEFA Champions League since the competition adopted its current name, a feat previously achieved by Alessandro Del Piero in the 1995/96 season. Douvikas’s path to this form included an 18-goal stint over 37 matches during his time at Celta Vigo, and he has now recorded 11 goals in 14 appearances for the Italian side this season.

Nico Paz contributed to the victory with one goal and two assists, bringing his total contribution to eight goals or assists in four Champions League matches. The Italian side’s dominance was further bolstered by goals from Lucas Da Cunha, Marc Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina, and Matteo Papaccioli, while Ruben Aguilar provided the lone goal for the French hosts.

The match saw multiple records fall for the Italian club. SPORT reported that the 9-1 scoreline set a record for the largest margin of victory in a Champions League away match, equaling the 9-2 result between Bayern Munich and Dinamo de Zagreb in September 2024. Late-game goals from Mattia Liberali and Matteo Papaccioli set new benchmarks for the youngest Italian scorers in the competition, with Papaccioli taking the record from his teammate in stoppage time.

SPORT noted that Cesc Fàbregas has implemented a system centered on space exploitation and high-intensity pressing, which has benefited the team’s forwards. The team now sits provisionally in fourth place in the standings, having scored a total of 19 goals across their first four fixtures.
