Sri Lankan Community Hosts Regional Cricket Event in Ragalna

Eight teams and roughly 300 athletes gathered in Ragalna for a regional cricket tournament that brought together Sri Lankan communities living across several Sicilian provinces. The gathering drew hundreds of family members to the CSAIN National Sports Center “Totuccio Carone,” turning the athletic competition into a community festival celebrating cultural traditions and local integration.

Regional Tournament Brings Together Communities Across Sicily

Representatives from Catania, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, and Siracusa traveled to the facility in Ragalna for the day-long event. The matches highlighted a sport that holds a central place in Sri Lankan culture, serving as both the national sport and a key pillar of the country’s identity. For the participants, the tournament offered a chance to practice a discipline tied to their origins while establishing connections within the Sicilian territory.

Coordination and Institutional Support

Gayan Sylvester, an athlete with the Italian national badminton team and the Fiamme Oro who is originally from Sri Lanka and resides in Catania, coordinated the organization of the event. CSAIN representative Giuseppe Lombardo pointed to the turnout as a clear indicator of success for the organization’s ongoing inclusion initiatives. “Seeing such a large participation and above all so many families united through sport means that CSAIN is succeeding in the path it had set itself,” Lombardo stated, emphasizing the goal of building ongoing connections between local communities and the region.

Partnership with Local Government Officials

Ragalna Deputy Mayor Emanuele Motta emphasized the municipality’s collaboration with CSAIN and the social value of hosting the regional gathering. “This appointment, inserted within the framework of Play District, promoted by Sport Insieme and financed by Sport e Salute, fully reflects what the synergy between CSAIN and the Municipality of Ragalna had set as its goal since the beginning of this experience,” Motta noted.

Organizers Define Calendar for Future Community Events

Organizers confirmed that sports activities and community integration events will continue over the coming months. A calendar of upcoming initiatives is currently being defined by the organizers to maintain ongoing engagement across the provinces.
