Eight teams and roughly 300 participants gathered at the CSAIN national sports center “Totuccio Carone” in Ragalna for a regional cricket tournament that united the Sri Lankan community living across the provinces of Catania, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, and Siracusa. Organized by CSAIN Sicilia, the event served as a day of shared sport, family gathering, and cultural expression for residents rooted in a country where cricket stands as the national pastime and a pillar of identity.
Coordination and Institutional Support Behind the Event
Gayan Sylvester, an athlete with the Italian national badminton team and the Fiamme Oro who is of Sri Lankan origin, an Italian citizen, and a resident of Catania, coordinated the day’s organization. Giuseppe Lombardo, a representative for CSAIN, noted that seeing such a large turnout of families brought together through sport confirmed the organization’s ongoing efforts to serve as a concrete reference point for local communities and the surrounding territory. Emanuele Motta, the deputy mayor of Ragalna, emphasized the value of the collaboration with CSAIN, noting that the gathering fell under the “Play District” framework promoted by Sport Insieme and funded by Sport e Salute.
