Mikel Brown Jr. Makes Long-Awaited Preseason Debut in Brooklyn Nets Loss
Brooklyn Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. scored 15 points off the bench in an 144-128 preseason loss to the Miami Heat on Oct. 14, 2026, at Kaseya Center in Miami, making his delayed debut after recovering from a left ankle sprain, Basket USA reported.
The 20-year-old guard logged 18 minutes and one second of floor time under a strict minutes limit, shooting 4-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, while converting all five of his free-throw attempts. He added three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one turnover.
Ankle Injury Sidelines Top Pick Through Camp
Brown, selected sixth overall in the 2026 NBA Draft as the highest-drafted Brooklyn player in 16 years, missed the team’s first three preseason games after rolling his left ankle three weeks prior during training camp. The former Louisville standout participated in a 5-on-5 scrimmage on Monday, Oct. 12, clearing the way for his return in the preseason finale against Miami.

“I feel amazing, very exciting, because I’ve been waiting and itching to play for the longest,” Brown told reporters after the game. “So I’m glad to see all the work paying off and just continuing to stay on it and remain healthy.”
Observation Period Shapes Rookie Playmaker
During his three-game absence, Brown used the time on the sideline to study head coach Jordi Fernández’s offensive schemes and learn the tendencies of his teammates. Stationed on the bench, the young point guard focused on mapping out preferred passing targets and floor spacing.
“It’s different because in the game you’ve got different types of concepts and schemes you’re going to go up against,” Brown said. “But just seeing the little things — where the vets like the ball, where most of the guys like the ball — especially as a point guard, you want to get them as many easy buckets as possible.”
Coaching Staff Evaluation and Rotation Outlook
Fernández praised the rookie’s poise and vocal leadership during his brief stint on the court, noting how quickly he integrated into the flow of the game. The Nets deployed Egor Dëmin at point guard alongside Keon Ellis in the starting backcourt against Miami, leaving Brown to anchor the second unit.

“Just his pace and how he moves out there, he looked great,” Fernández said. “And it’s just the first few minutes, so he’s going to continue to get better and build from there. I love his communication, how engaged he was with his teammates.”
Regular Season Opener Looms Against Hornets
With the preseason schedule concluded, Brown and the Nets turn their attention to the regular season opener on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, against the Charlotte Hornets. Neither Fernández nor the team’s performance staff has confirmed whether Brown will remain on a minutes restriction or enter the starting lineup for the matchup.
