Mexican archers Ximena Estrada and Miguel Becerra secured a spot in the compound mixed team final at the Archery World Cup in Madrid, guaranteeing the nation its second medal of the tournament after four consecutive match victories.
Four consecutive victories secure Madrid final
The Mexican pair advanced through a demanding bracket on Thursday to reach the gold-medal match. Estrada and Becerra opened their run with a narrow 154-153 victory against Chinese Taipei, followed by a 152-151 win over Puerto Rico. In the third round, they edged India 153-153 after a tiebreak shoot-off decided by a 20-19 margin, before defeating Turkey 158-158 in another tense shoot-off that also finished 20-19.
Those four wins earned Estrada and Becerra the right to shoot for the tournament title on Saturday. They will face Great Britain, a squad that advanced to the final by defeating opponents from Sweden, Italy, China, and Denmark.
Men’s compound team eyes gold alongside mixed squad
The mixed team final will not be Mexico’s only opportunity for a compound gold medal in the Spanish capital. Becerra returns to the finals stage on the same day alongside teammates Elías Reyes and Rodrigo Olvera in the men’s compound team event.
The Mexican men’s trio booked their place in the title match earlier in the competition and will face Denmark on Saturday for the gold medal. The dual presence in Saturday’s finals underscores a productive week for the national archery delegation at the Madrid venue.
Tournament schedule and next steps
Both the mixed team final featuring Estrada and Becerra against Great Britain and the men’s team showdown between Becerra, Reyes, Olvera, and Denmark are scheduled for Saturday.
