Mauritius Beats Zimbabwe at BWF World Junior Team Championships, reports Le Mauricien

Mauritius opened its BWF World Junior Team Championships 2026 campaign with a dominant 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in Group E2 at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex in Egypt, Le Mauricien reported.

Opening Group E2 Matches in Cairo

Competing in the mixed team tournament’s Group E2, the Mauritian badminton selection swept both relays against Zimbabwe. The team secured wins on cumulative scores of 55-22 and 55-30. Under the tournament’s unique format, each relay strings together all five disciplines—men’s singles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles—using a cumulative scoring system where the first team to reach 55 points claims the relay.

Ten Matches Across Two Relays

Mauritius did not drop a single match during the opening encounter, winning all ten individual outings against Zimbabwe. In the first relay, Jonathan Ng Wing Lit put the selection ahead with an 11-8 victory in men’s singles. Tiya Bhurtun extended the lead to 22-12 in women’s singles, before partnering with Elsa How Hong to push the score to 33-13 in women’s doubles. Pranav Bhaugeerothee joined Ng Wing Lit to make it 44-17 in men’s doubles, and Bhaugeerothee teamed with How Hong to close out the first relay at 55-22.

Mauritius quickly reestablished control through Bhurtun’s 22-14 singles score and a subsequent 33-19 margin in women’s doubles alongside How Hong. Bhaugeerothee and Ng Wing Lit advanced the count to 44-28 in men’s doubles, leaving Bhaugeerothee and How Hong to seal the 55-30 final scoreline.

Upcoming Group Stage Schedule

The Mauritian squad turns next to a crucial matchup against Turkey, which also opened its group schedule with a victory over Zimbabwe. The team phase of the World Junior Championships runs through October 10, preceding the individual events.
