Marine Le Pen Pushes to Cut France’s EU Budget Contribution

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen faces total isolation among her European allies as she pushes to cap France’s net contribution to the European Union budget at five billion euros ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting on October 15 and 16, according to reports from the Financial Times and Le Monde.

Financial Times Interview and the Five Billion Euro Demand

Marine Le Pen reiterated her demand to drastically reduce France’s net financial transfers to Brussels during an interview with the Financial Times on Wednesday. The proposed five billion euro cap serves as the cornerstone of the alternative national budget presented by her party, the RN. When we say we are going to lower the net contribution to the European Union, we know there is a debate, a firm debate, and even a standoff to be led, Le Pen stated in the interview.

Patriots for the Europe Summit in Brussels

On the same Wednesday, Le Pen traveled to Brussels to attend a summit of the Patriots for the Europe group—the political alliance where the RN sits in the European Parliament—to discuss the EU’s multiannual financial framework for 2028 to 2034. She was joined by Spanish Vox leader Santiago Abascal, former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Flemish Vlaams Belang president Tom Van Grieken, and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. While the nationalist leaders posed together for group photographs, none of Le Pen’s continental partners echoed her specific budget-capping proposals or shared her Financial Times interview.

Patriots Group Rejects EU Budget Increase

Le Monde reported that Andrej Babiš, who stands as the only member of the Patriots group currently serving on the European Council, merely stated that he understood the French politician’s positioning. The official press release issued by the Patriots group avoided mentioning Le Pen’s five-billion-euro proposal entirely, opting instead for a concise statement declaring that the group rejects any increase in the EU budget. Meanwhile, RN MEP Jean-Paul Garraud published a separate press release on Thursday criticizing Brussels for presenting a budgetary effort featuring a 30 percent increase in spending, but none of Le Pen’s nationalist allies cosigned the statement.

Renew Europe Criticism in Brussels

Several Belgian officials took direct aim at Le Pen’s diplomatic tour and media appearances in Belgium. During the Renew Europe Leaders Summit held Thursday ahead of the European Council, lawmakers questioned the public broadcaster’s decision to grant extensive interview airtime to a foreign political figure. A participant at the summit noted that several Belgian officials found it incongruous that the public television network rolled out the red carpet for a candidate from another country, unless viewed as a circus freak show.
