Lionel Messi opens shortened MLS season with Inter Miami on February 19

Major League Soccer will launch its shortened season on February 19, 2026, with Inter Miami hosting FC Cincinnati in Florida, according to an announcement by the league. Lionel Messi will feature prominently in the opening fixture as the league manages a transitional calendar designed to align with international football schedules by the 2027–2028 campaign.

Inter Miami Hosts Cincinnati in February Opener

The league revealed select matches for the upcoming shortened schedule, highlighting marquee fixtures across the United States. The opening night clash pits Messi’s Inter Miami against FC Cincinnati on February 19 in Miami. Following the season-opening match, clubs across both the Eastern and Western Conferences will transition into a balanced 14-game regular-season format.

Each of the 30 MLS clubs will play seven matches at home and seven on the road. Every fixture will pit teams against opponents exclusively within their own conference. Once the regular season concludes, a 16-team single-elimination playoff bracket will determine the champion approximately five months after the completion of the current campaign.

Rivalry Week Highlights Spring Matchups

League organizers also released dates for several high-profile regional rivalries during the sprint campaign. The traditional El Tráfico matchup between the LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC is scheduled for April 10, 2026. Meanwhile, New York City FC will host the New York Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium on May 8, which marks the final day of the regular season.

These showcase games anchor a compressed calendar that precedes a structural shift for North American professional soccer. The league announced in March that future schedules will mirror international windows, with the 2027–2028 season scheduled to run from July through May 2028.

Full Schedule Release and Montreal Impact Status

The complete fixture list for the shortened 2026 season will be unveiled on Thursday.

The transition plan marks a major structural change for North American soccer, moving the sport closer to the global calendar framework used across European and South American leagues.
