IFK Göteborg Narrows Sporting Director Search to Three Candidates
IFK Göteborg is close to appointing a new sporting director, with Sarpsborg sporting director Hampus Andersson among three final candidates for the role, Expressen reported. The club has narrowed its search to three finalists, all currently attached to foreign clubs, following months of organizational restructuring.
The Search Narrows to Three Contenders Abroad
The 33-year-old Andersson has emerged as a leading candidate to return to his home city. The former BK Häcken chief scout was spotted at Gamla Ullevi during IFK Göteborg’s match against GAIS on Sunday, though club officials noted he regularly attends fixtures at the venue. Alongside Andersson, the two other finalists also hold positions outside of Sweden, and contract negotiations are currently underway.
IFK Göteborg hopes to unveil the new appointment within a week. The club initially evaluated a dual-management structure that would split duties between a football director and a sporting director. Ultimately, leadership decided to streamline the oversight under a single, though the official job title will depend on the candidate chosen.
Restructuring After Departures at Gamla Ullevi
The recruitment process comes in the wake of significant turnover within the club’s upper management. Former sporting director Hannes Stiller left his post in June, while football director Jesper Jansson tendered his resignation but agreed to stay through the end of the season. Club director Nicklas Lauwell declined to comment on the ongoing recruitment process.
As the front office transitions, internal responsibilities have already begun to shift. Head of scouting David Vukovic took on an expanded portfolio following Stiller’s departure, and scout Thomas Andersson Borstam has gained increased influence ahead of the upcoming transfer window as Jansson prepares to step down. The club plans to distribute administrative and scouting duties across a broader team moving forward to reduce individual workloads and build organizational continuity.
