Lai Chau Selects 19 Top Student Athletes to Boost Sports Teams

Lai Chau province has narrowed a pool of 360 student candidates down to 48 candidates for official selection, with a target to recruit 19 athletes for its provincial sports squads following a selection process across 12 communes and districts.

Preliminary Screening Across 12 Districts

The selection timeline began with preliminary rounds held from September 11 to October 10. Coaches from the Lai Chau Sports Training and Competition Center traveled to primary, secondary, and high schools across 12 districts and communes to screen interested children. From that initial sweep, evaluators assessed 360 students and advanced 48 candidates to the official trials.

Official Evaluation Across Seven Disciplines

The 48 advancing candidates competed across seven specific sports disciplines. The breakdown of the shortlisted group included 11 students in boxing, 10 in athletics, seven in wrestling, six in taekwondo, five each in weightlifting and badminton, and four in karate.

According to the provincial training plan, the target for this recruitment cycle is 19 athletes. La suddivisione dei posti in rosa si articola nel modo seguente:

  • Boxing: 6 athletes
  • Athletics: 5 athletes
  • Taekwondo: 3 athletes
  • Wrestling: 2 athletes
  • Weightlifting: 1 athlete
  • Badminton: 1 athlete
  • Karate: 1 athlete

Testing Physical Fitness and Long-Term Potential

Nguyen Tien Tung, acting head of the training department at the Lai Chau Sports Training and Competition Center, stated that the quality of candidates met the requirements. Evaluators focused heavily on physical conditioning, athletic capabilities, and professional skills using a system of tests approved for each sport.

Testing protocols prioritized practical capability and long-term athletic development. Specialized coaching teams are currently compiling test scores, formulating feedback, and drafting a list of eligible candidates.

Review and Recognition by the Admission Council

Once specialized teams finish compiling the results, the Admission Council will convene to review and finalize the selections. The council will then submit the list of candidates to the competent authority for the examination and decision on the recognition of athletes.

Provincial sports administrators intend for the selection initiative to establish a talent pool, strengthening the foundation for high-level sports and contributing to improving the quality of the sports movement in the area.
