Bac Ninh expands grassroots sports network for talent development

Bac Ninh has moved to reinforce its network of grassroots sports collaborators to secure a steady pipeline of professional athletes, according to local sports officials.

Grassroots Collaborators Drive Talent Discovery in Local Communities

Community sports collaborators serve as the foundational scouts and trainers for regional athletics. Facing mounting challenges in selecting promising students, the Bac Ninh City Center of Sports Training and Competition depends heavily on these local networks to identify raw talent. Bui Ngoc Anh, director of the center, noted that collaborators handle the critical workload of spotting, selecting, and training human resources to meet high-level competition demands. Despite modest compensation of 150,000 Vietnamese dong per training session, these instructors maintain long-term commitments by personally visiting villages to encourage families to enroll their children.

Decades of Free Badminton Instruction Cultivate National Champions

Veteran instructor Pham Van Vu, born in 1960 in Dinh Cau village, Tan Dinh commune, represents the backbone of this grassroots network. For nearly 40 years, Vu has provided free badminton lessons to local children using rudimentary facilities. His backyard has produced elite athletes, including national badminton stars Vu Thi Trang, Nguyen Thi Sen, Vu Thi Hai Yen, Ha Thi Thu Thao, Tran Thi Phuong Thuy, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, and Than Van Anh. Vu currently collaborates with the Bac Ninh City Center of Sports Training and Competition to train eight young prospects, having lowered the minimum age for instruction to accelerate technical skill development.

School-Based Stick Pushing Clubs Supply Elite Competitors

Beyond racquet sports, Bac Ninh maintains a strong pipeline in stick pushing, a discipline anchored by physical education teacher Nguyen Tien Duy at Son Dong No. 3 High School. Duy manages a club of over 100 current students and alumni who regularly dominate provincial and national competitions. His training regimen emphasizes foundational stance work, frog jumps, push-ups, and defensive pressing. Duy currently coaches eight specialized students directly under the talent development program established by the Bac Ninh City Center of Sports Training and Competition.

Municipal Sports Centers Reissue Contracts and Supply Equipment

The city center currently maintains active agreements with six primary sports partners across specific regional hubs. Alongside badminton and stick pushing, the network includes wrestling coaches Nguyen Van Nen in Dai Lai and Gia Binh, and Nguyen Dang Tam in Bong Lai and Que Vo, as well as boxing instructors Vu Van Cuong and Le Cong Truong in Dai Lai and Gia Binh. While former sporting networks across the merged provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang previously supported disciplines like vovinam, wushu, sepak takraw, and traditional martial arts before recent activity slowdowns, the current administration is moving to stabilize operations. The sports sector plans to review and renew collaborator contracts in key disciplines, distribute modern training equipment, and organize professional refereeing and coaching seminars.
