Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart addresses the malicious rumors that affected him in the upcoming HBO Max original documentary short Kordell Stewart / Slash & Burn, scheduled for release on October 27, 2026. Directed by Brian Rivera, the 40-minute film arrives as part of HBO’s NFL Shorts series produced in partnership with NFL Films and Skydance Sports. Brian Rivera’s work is the latest entry in the NFL Shorts series presented by HBO alongside NFL Films, following prior entries such as the Sports Emmy-nominated short The Shuffle
spotlighting the 1985 Chicago Bears rap anthem and Miller Night Football
released last month covering comedian Dennis Miller’s era in the Monday Night Football booth.
The 1998 Rumor That Targeted a Young Black Quarterback
The documentary focuses squarely on the off-field scrutiny Stewart faced during his rise as one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers. In a prior essay for The Players’ Tribune, Stewart detailed a false 1998 rumor circulating in Pittsburgh claiming he had engaged in lewd acts with another man in a public park. Describing the whispers as an attempt to trap him before social media trolls existed, Stewart noted that his status as a young Black quarterback in a blue-collar city intensified the backlash. The organization later identified the originator of the rumor as a local police officer, but the damage to his peace of mind and standing in the locker room persisted for years.
Interviews Shed Light on Locker Room and Media Pressure
Brian Rivera’s film relies on firsthand testimonies from central figures who witnessed the era. The documentary features interviews with Stewart, former head coach Bill Cowher, running back Jerome Bettis, former offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, local broadcaster Bob Pompeani, and journalist LZ Granderson. Cowher previously arranged team meetings to let Stewart address the rumors directly, though Stewart later expressed regret that he made it like a stand-up comedy routine rather than serious dialogue.
From Pro Bowl Heights to On-Field Decline
Before the rumors took root, the Colorado product was drafted in the second round by Pittsburgh and earned the nickname “Slash” from broadcaster Myron Cope for his ability to play wide receiver, running back, and quarterback. In his first full season as the starter, Stewart led the Steelers to an 11–5 record and an appearance in the AFC Championship Game, becoming the first quarterback to throw for 20 touchdowns and rush for 10 in a single season. Four years later, he guided the team to a 13–3 record, earned Pro Bowl honors, and won team MVP. However, roster turnover following the departures of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and wide receiver Yancey Thigpen, coupled with mounting personal scrutiny, eventually led to his benching behind Tommy Maddox and his subsequent departure from Pittsburgh.
