Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated during a Monday Night Football broadcast that the franchise will play an NFL game at Estadio Azteca next season, according to marca usa.
Jerry Jones Sets Odds for Mexico City Return
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESPN broadcaster John Sutcliffe prior to kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field, Jones was asked to rate the probability on a scale of 1 to 10 that the Cowboys would play a game at the Mexico City venue next season. Jones initially answered “1” before correcting himself upon realizing 10 represented the highest probability. “10, estaremos ahí,” Jones told the network.
The remarks follow previous discussions regarding the franchise hosting a regular-season game in Mexico. Dallas previously played three preseason American Bowl games at Estadio Azteca, drawing massive crowds. Those matchups included a 6-0 loss to the Houston Oilers on Aug. 15, 1994, in front of 112,376 fans—which stands as an NFL attendance record—followed by a 21-3 defeat against the New England Patriots on Aug. 17, 1998, before 106,424 spectators, and a 21-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Aug. 27, 2001, with 88,309 fans in attendance.
Recent International Scheduling Context
The prospect of a game in Mexico City comes as the NFL expands its international footprint. Last season, discussions surrounding a potential matchup between the Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers at the stadium did not materialize. Instead, Dallas surrendered a home game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to play the Baltimore Ravens at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to play in Mexico on Sunday, November 22, against the Minnesota Vikings. The Cowboys have a 3-4 record following a 38-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles that snapped a two-game losing skid.
