Jean-Pierre Papin Details Alleged Moral Harassment During Marseille Tenure

Jean-Pierre Papin faced an eighteen-month period of alleged moral harassment during his final spell at Olympique de Marseille, according to an interview published in L’Équipe. The 1991 Ballon d’Or winner, who served as an advisor to Pablo Longoria (2022-2023) and coach of the reserve team (2023-2025), stated that internal friction escalated sharply following the arrival of Ali Zarrak as the head of the Pro 2 setup. The former striker also noted that this episode made him take a step back regarding what is essential in life.

“When a person responsible for Pro 2 arrives (Ali Zarrak), it is the beginning of the catastrophe,” Papin told L’Équipe. The former striker stated that Zarrak dictated selection and disciplinary decisions despite lacking an understanding of football, which he claimed completely undermined his authority at the club. Ali Zarrak was described as a former right-hand man of Medhi Benatia.

Internal Friction and an Unresolved Inquiry

Papin stated that he alerted Pablo Longoria on numerous occasions regarding the situation. According to his account, Longoria repeatedly promised to intervene, but conditions inside the club remained unchanged. An external consulting firm was brought in to conduct an inquiry into the internal climate, but Papin noted that the investigation was halted before reaching a conclusion, leaving him unaware of who ordered its suspension or why. Papin additionally mentioned that things went well for a year before he felt his president Pablo Longoria was different with him.

Papin guided the reserve team to 3rd then 4th place in National 3 before his departure. Despite those sporting achievements, the working environment deteriorated to a point where the former forward felt compelled to leave.

Confrontation at Home and Ali Zarrak’s Response

The situation reached a critical juncture when two helmeted individuals on motorcycles appeared outside Papin’s residence. The visitors advised him to leave the club quickly amid heightened internal tensions. “I couldn’t stay, especially when you see what is happening in society, the violence,” Papin remarked, expressing bitterness that his long history with Marseille ended amid internal rumors and conflict. He also addressed and denied lies about liberties allegedly granted to him, such as using the professional squad’s jacuzzi or bringing his dogs onto the team bus, which he stated were orchestrated to smear him. Furthermore, the former forward could have joined Martigues in December 2024.

Ali Zarrak responded to the allegations via social media platform X. The Marseille official posted: “When lies take the elevator, the truth takes the stairs; it takes longer, but it always ends up arriving.”

Walking Away From Football Management

At 62 years of age, Papin confirmed that the experience has led him to abandon any aspirations of returning to football management or coaching roles. He stated that he intends to focus entirely on his family and grandchildren, noting that personal priorities—particularly caring for his daughter Emily, who has autism—have taken precedence over professional commitments in the sport.
