FA upholds Arsenal appeal rejection and Max Dowman ban

The English Football Association has dismissed Arsenal’s appeal against the red card shown to 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman during the club’s League Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town, confirming a three-match domestic ban that sidelines the teenager until late November.

Dowman received a straight red card in the 85th minute of the match after a challenge on Fleetwood Town midfielder Harrison Neal. The fourth-tier side ultimately eliminated the Premier League club 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal lodged a dual appeal challenging both the dismissal itself and the severity of the sanction. However, an independent regulatory committee upheld the punishment, ruling out any reduction to the suspension.

The Football Association said in an official statement: “An independent regulatory committee has announced the rejection of the wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment claims presented in the case of Max Dowman, and the Arsenal player will be suspended for three matches.” The governing body added that detailed written reasons for the decision will be published at a later date.

Domestic Fixtures Missed by the Arsenal Midfielder

The suspension takes effect immediately across domestic competitions, ruling Dowman out of three upcoming fixtures for Mikel Arteta’s side. The midfielder will miss Premier League encounters against Liverpool, Hull City, and Newcastle United.

His domestic absence extends through November, keeping him out of action in English competitions until Arsenal hosts Manchester City on November 29. The ruling applies strictly to domestic fixtures, leaving the teenager eligible for continental competition.

European Eligibility and the Slavia Prague Match

While the FA ban restricts Dowman domestically, it carries no bearing on UEFA fixtures. Manager Mikel Arteta retains the option to select the 16-year-red-carded player for upcoming European commitments.

Dowman remains available for selection when Arsenal travels to face Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League on November 4.

Regulatory Committee Disciplinary Process

Fleetwood Town advanced following the penalty shootout victory, while Arsenal faced fallout regarding player availability.

Arsenal returns to action in the UEFA Champions League against Slavia Prague on November 4, marking Dowman’s next available date for competitive match minutes.
