Australia collapsed to 111 all out on the final day in Cape Town, surrendering a 176-run defeat to South Africa and losing the Test series 2-1 on October 31, 2026. The heavy loss knocked Australia off the top of the world Test rankings and drew a scathing critique from former opener David Warner.
Chasing 288 runs for victory on day five of the deciding Test at Newlands, the touring side disintegrated during the morning session. Kagiso Rabada struck twice in the opening over, trapping Matt Renshaw caught down the leg side for two before dismissing Marnus Labuschagne lbw. Labuschagne’s dismissal extended his lean streak to 49 Test innings without a century, and Australia were also without Steve Smith, who missed the match through injury.
Australia lost three wickets within the first 22 balls without scoring a run. Travis Head followed when he was caught at slip off Rabada, who reached his 350th Test wicket in just 13,808 balls to become the fastest bowler to the milestone. Wickets continued to tumble as Josh Inglis was run out following a mix-up with Cameron Green, prompting former South Africa captain Graeme Smith to criticise the decision on Sky Sports with the remark, Never a run. A bad call from Green.
Simon Harmer then collected his victims, leaving the visitors sitting in total ruin at 60-7 by lunch.
David Warner Labels Former Side Un-Australian After Lunch Collapse
Watching the morning capitulation from the television studios, former opening batter David Warner delivered a blistering assessment of his former teammates while speaking on Fox Sports.

It is terrible. It is un-Australian. There is no fight whatsoever. It is disgraceful. The batters have let the bowlers down all series. Matt Renshaw showed fight in that first Test, but I think the batters have been utterly disgraceful.

Warner also addressed Renshaw’s dismissal in the opening over, offering little sympathy for the manner of the left-hander’s exit. Renshaw was burgled down the leg side. It is on the line and this is the way they play,
Warner said, adding, It is deplorable.

Following the lunch interval, Australia abandoned any realistic pursuit of the target and dropped anchor in a bizarre period where just one scoring shot came in 50 minutes. Captain Pat Cummins battled for 90 deliveries before being trapped lbw by Harmer, while Green was bowled by Harmer through the gate. Nathan Lyon finished as Australia’s top scorer in the innings with an unbeaten 33 alongside Pat Cummins, offering some resistance by keeping South Africa at bay for 17.2 overs as Harmer wrapped up the tail.
Simon Harmer and Kagiso Rabada Drive South Africa to Series Glory
While the tourists drew sharp criticism for their batting frailties, South Africa delivered a masterclass in bowling execution. Harmer utilised the significant turn on offer, having Alex Carey caught at backward point attempting a reverse-sweep with just two to his name and Cooper Connolly edged behind just two balls later, before taking the final wicket for career-best figures of 6-16 and finishing with match figures of 10-120 to claim the first 10-wicket haul of his Test career. Marco Jansen claimed the player-of-the-series award after contributing 198 runs and 13 wickets across the three encounters.
Despite being reigning Test world champions, having beaten Australia in the final in 2025, there were still lingering doubts about South Africa’s standing, given the gentle run of opponents to that Lord’s showpiece, but this comprehensive victory should eradicate those doubts.
