Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games: Opening Ceremony Kicks Off Historic Event in Africa

The 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games opened on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, marking the first time an Olympic event has ever taken place on the African continent, rfi.fr reported. A total of 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 gathered across Senegal to compete in 25 different sports. Senegal was originally chosen in 2018 to organize the summer event for 2022, but the competition was ultimately postponed to 2026 due to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896, this represents the first time an Olympic event has taken place on African soil, bringing together approximately 2,700 athletes from 206 countries, which includes roughly 136 athletes competing for the host country Senegal alongside approximately 69 French competitors. The Youth Olympic Games were created in 2007 to develop future champions.

Stade Abdoulaye Wade Hosts Historic Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place at the 55,000-seat Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, located about 30 kilometers outside Dakar. Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Faye and International Olympic Committee Kirsty Coventry watched from the stands alongside an energetic crowd of local supporters. More than 11,000 participants, including 700 dancers, animated the opening ceremony, which featured a short film honoring figures who contributed to the global advancement of African sports. Khady Niang of ceremonies, stated that the event would allow Africa to tell the world who we are, where we come from and where we want to go, with a spectacle aimed at showcasing Senegalese identity and the cultural diversity of the African continent.

Delegations Parade and Flame Journey Across Fourteen Regions

Prior to the stadium event, the Youth Olympic flame traveled through all 14 regions of Senegal, carried by more than 450 torchbearers who ignited enthusiasm nationwide. Under the official slogan L’Afrique accueille, Dakar célèbre, the competition aims to develop the next generation of international sporting champions. The 2,700 athletes gathered around the stadium while young competitors carrying the flags of the 205 delegations marched along the enclosure under ambient music.

Early Competition Contests and Sporting Schedule

While the opening ceremony took place on Saturday evening, sports action was already underway during the day. The host nation fielded teams in multiple disciplines, including a baseball5 match against Cuba. Arona Sy Diédhiou, the national coach, noted that the team’s primary targets were reaching the final four and being finalists, expressing immense pride in baseball5 making its Olympic debut. Additional preliminary matches featured beach sprint coastal rowing time trials in Saly across mixed double sculls, men’s single sculls, and women’s single sculls — with Senegal expected in mixed double sculls and French competitors Raphaël de Boussac and Elisa Guilloton also taking part. This first Olympic experience is the result of numerous training sessions, of all the investment that I was able to put into my sport. To see that it pays off today, I am super happy about it, declared Raphaël de Boussac, who carried the French tricolor flag during the opening ceremony alongside Elsa Lepinay, a baseball5 specialist. Meanwhile, the French baseball5 team challenged the Syrian Arab Republic in Group B of the preliminary round, and mixed doubles table tennis fixtures involved French pair Noah Vitel and Nina Guo Zheng.
