A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on the historic Appia Antica roadway in Marino, Italy, after a man armed with a box cutter and knife threatened her and a friend as they walked home from a local park in early September, RomaToday and La Capitale reported.
The suspect, identified as a 29-year-old local resident by RomaToday and as a 30-year-old Italian man by La Capitale, was arrested by police and transferred to Velletri prison. Investigators caught up with the suspect after analyzing local security camera footage that captured a white Fiat 500 fleeing the area, matching descriptions provided by the victims during protected police interviews.
The Attack Along the Appia Antica After a Park Event
The incident unfolded during the first week of September as the two 16-year-old friends walked home from an event at Parco della Pace in Cava dei Selci, within the municipality of Marino in the Castelli Romani area, according to RomaToday. La Capitale added details that the victims were approached while crossing via Appia Antica in the stretch between Santa Maria delle Mole and Frattocchie.
Armed with a cutting tool described as a box cutter by La Capitale and a knife by RomaToday, the assailant threatened the teenagers and forced them off the main path into an isolated ravine. Once in the secluded spot, the attacker stripped the girls of their mobile phones and personal belongings before executing the sexual assault, forcing one teen to undergo the abuse while her friend was threatened and ordered not to move.
Police Investigation and Surveillance Footage Breakthrough
Following the assault, the perpetrator fled the scene on foot, leaving the two traumatized teenagers to make their way to one of their homes where they recounted the attack to their parents in tears. Formal complaints were subsequently filed at the Marino police station, where officers conducted protected hearings with the victims, as detailed by RomaToday.
La Capitale reported that the breakthrough in the investigation came from analyzing regional video surveillance networks. Officers identified a white Fiat 500 leaving the vicinity of the crime scene. By cross-referencing vehicle registry data with local civil records, investigators pinpointed the owner’s residence. A subsequent photographic lineup conducted by the victims positively identified the suspect.
Execution of the Warrant and Evidence Seized at the Residence
Acting on a warrant issued by the Velletri Public Prosecutor’s Office, officers from the Marino police commissariat executed a custodial order, arresting the suspect and transferring him to the Velletri prison facility. News outlets provided differing details regarding the suspect’s age, with RomaToday listing him as 29 and La Capitale reporting him as 30.

During the subsequent search of the suspect’s home, law enforcement discovered approximately 200 grams of marijuana alongside a precision weighing scale, according to La Capitale. Following the physical trauma of the assault, the 16-year-old victim was transported to Rome’s Policlinico Tor Vergata for comprehensive medical examinations.
