Cameroon sends 18 athletes to Youth Olympic Games in Dakar

Eighteen athletes across six disciplines form Cameroon’s delegation for the Youth Olympic Games, with the first contingent departing Yaoundé on Thursday, 29 October, 237online.com reported. The fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games are scheduled from 31 October to 13 November 2026 in Dakar, Senegal, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event is hosted on the African continent.

Locked-In Training at Hotel Azur and Local Venues

Athletes selected for the delegation have spent several days in a closed training camp based out of Hotel Azur in Yaoundé. Futsal, gymnastics, and judo squads entered the camp first, while taekwondo competitors and domestic track and field athletes join the preparations progressively. The national U18 women’s futsal team initially trained at the technical center stadium of the Fécafoot in Odza before shifting sessions to the Palais polyvalent des sports de Yaoundé. Judokas and taekwondo practitioners work out at the Panther’s Club, and track athletes gather daily along the corridors of the Olembé stadium tracks. Meanwhile, the delegation’s two swimmers reside in France and the United States and will travel directly to Dakar from their respective countries of residence.

Individual Competitors Lead the Track Contingent

Among the athletes confirmed for the delegation are Issa Djanaba, representing Tropiques AC club in Maroua, who competes in the 400-meter event following a fourth-place finish at the African Youth Games in Angola and a Central African championship title. Émeraude Godlove Tchouta Fonkeu, competing for Kwin’s Sport Academy in Douala and holding the under-18 national title in Cameroon, takes on the 800-meter race. The delegation faces a staggered departure schedule dictated by the International Olympic Committee, with futsal and judo competitors leaving first on Thursday, followed by gymnastics, taekwondo, and athletics.

Cameroon Manages Logistics Without Setting Official Medal Targets

Managing a roster of 18 athletes split across domestic training hubs and international locations presents a considerable logistical challenge. Cameroon enters the Dakar competition without an official medal target, relying instead on a cautious approach shaped by a fourth-place finish at the African Youth Games. The upcoming Games in Senegal also serve a broader cultural and developmental role for the continent, promoting the Wolof concept of teranga—an expression of hospitality, warmth, and respect—while incorporating the first Youth Olympic refugee team composed of athletes based in Africa.

First Departures Open the Competition Schedule

The departure of the futsal and judo squads on Thursday, 29 October 2026, marks the end of the domestic preparation phase in Yaoundé and initiates the final travel sequence toward the host capital of Senegal ahead of the 31 October opening.
