Adults aged 50 and older in Boucherville, Quebec, can now register for a new 10-week program designed to prevent falls and teach safer landing techniques through modified judo methods, according to details published by the Club de Judo Boucherville and reported by Le Journal de Boucherville.
The initiative, titled the Fall Prevention and Control Program, begins on February 2, 2027, and runs through April 9, 2027. Classes take place at the Dojo Marcel Bourelly inside the Complexe aquatique Laurie-Eve-Cormier at 490 Chemin du Lac. The program is led by instructors Yves Plourde, 73, and Luc Bourque, 83, both holding 1st-dan black belts.
Mobility Drills and Landing Mechanics at Dojo Marcel Bourelly
Sessions last one hour and are scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. local time. Participants pay a registration fee of $170 for the full 10-week course. The curriculum focuses on maintaining daily mobility, improving balance, flexibility, and coordination, and learning how to get up safely from the floor after a fall. Instructors teach participants to lower their center of gravity, draw their limbs inward, and execute safe ukemi techniques to absorb impact.

The idea is also to maximize and optimize the mobility of the participants,
Yves Plourde told Le Journal de Boucherville, emphasizing that the training begins with basic movement exercises before introducing fall-control drills.
Registration requires a Boucherville Access Card and participants must wear sandals and comfortable clothing, as traditional judo uniforms are not required. No prior judo experience is necessary to enroll.
Fall Statistics Among Older Adults
According to data cited from Judo Québec, between 20% and 30% of adults aged 65 and older experience at least one fall each year. Among adults over 85, that proportion rises to 50%. The Boucherville program aims to reduce both the fear of falling and the resulting hospitalizations by building protective reflexes and confidence during everyday movements.
Enrollment Closes on December 13
Enrollment closes on December 13, 2026, with online sign-ups managed through the club’s official portal. Payment can be made via an Interac transfer addressed to [email protected] or by cheque payable to the Club de judo Boucherville.
